Gameday Game Recap

ST. PAUL, Minn. (9/15/10)-- No.14-ranked Concordia scored a pair of head goals and went on to beat conference rival Macalester 2-0 in St. Paul on Wednesday. The Cobbers received headers from Sarah Rounds early in the game and then from Sue Obermiller late in the league contest in posting their second win in MIAC play.

The Cobers are now 4-1 overall and 2-0 in league play. The Scots have their two-game winning streak come to an end and move to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the MIAC.

Rounds started the scoring when she flicked home a header off of a cross from Gina Weiss at 8:52. Weiss made a knifing run down the right wing and then served the ball to Rounds who ran on to the cross and flicked it into the left corner of the net.

That goal would help Concordia settle into the game and make sure Macalester would have to break down Cobber defensive numbers in order to get the equalizer. The Scots had chances in both halves but Concordia keeper Ali Nelson and the rest of the CC defense was able to thwart any real scoring opportunity.

Concordia came out in the second half and went on the attack and tried to get the insurance goal early in the last 45 minutes. The Scots survived the early Cobber run and then had chances in the middle part of the period. That would change in the 81st minute when Concordia was awarded a corner kick. Sam Johnson played the ball short to Abby Habein and Habein then crossed the ball toward the Macalester goal. Obermiller, who was positioned in front of Scot goalie Rosie Glenn-Finer, flicked it over her head and past Glenn-Finer for the insurance score.

Macalester outshot Concordia 16-13 in the game. The Scots also held an 8-6 advantage in shots on frame. Nelson stopped all eight shots to earn her second shutout of the season and 12th of her career. Glenn-Finer made four saves in the loss.

The Cobbers will stay on the road in the MIAC when they play at Gustavus on Saturday, Sept. 18 at 1 p.m.
