MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/03/09)-- Concordia exploded for four goals in the second half against St. Mary's and came away with a 4-0 win in Moorhead on Saturday. The Cobbers cracked the game wide open after the teams played to a scoreless tie at halftime. The win is the 10th straight to start the season for CC and sixth consecutive in the MIAC.

Concordia did everything but score in the first half of play. The Cobbers outshot the Cardinals (5-4-1/1-4-1 MIAC) 8-1 in the first period but couldn't get a ball past SMU keeper Mariana Sanchez.

That storyline changed in the 54th minute of play when Susan Obermiller played a through ball behind the Cardinal's defense and forward Sam Johnson held off a defender and battle the ball past Sanchez to put home the first goal of the game. For Johnson it was her teams-leading seventh goal of the year.

It took Concordia almost 20 minutes to get the second goal and put the game out of reach. Cobber wing midfielder Killashandra Link was getting behind the St. Mary's defense on a regular basis in the second half and one of her knifing runs finally set up the second score. Link drove the ball towards the top of the box and then cut the ball inside to set herself up for a shot. Her shot on goal was destined to be caught by Sanchez but a defender accidentally tried to stop the shot and the ball ricocheted off her leg and into the far side of the goal.

That goal set off a flurry of three CC scores in less than 13 minutes. Johnson scored her second goal of the game when she tipped in a dead ball service from defender Nikole Koehn. Koehn sent the ball into the SMU penalty area and the ball flew over the Cardinal's back line and in front of Sanchez. Johnson ran onto the ball and tipped it past Sanchez before she could reach the ball.

The final goal of the game came courtesy of sophomore Noelle Hiedeman. After a scramble in front of the net, the ball popped out to Hiedeman who calmly finished off the chance to record her first collegiate goal.

The game ended with Concordia holding a 24-1 edge in overall shots and 14-0 in shots on goal. Cobber goalie Ali Nelson did not have to make a save to earn her sixth shutout of the season and ninth win. Sanchez was on top of her game as she stopped 10 shots and routinely stopped quality chances in the penalty area.

Concordia will host UW-Superior in a non-conference game on Tuesday, Oct. 6 at 4 p.m.
