Gameday Game Recap

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. (11/01/08)-- It might have been a temporary setback for Concordia on Saturday against St. Ben's but in the end the long-term goal was kept alive. The Cobbers lost 1-0 to the Blazers in St. Joseph but ended up earning their sixth straight MIAC playoff berth because of results around the league. CC is the only team in the MIAC to have earned a spot in all six conference playoff tournaments.

With the loss, Concordia ends up with the No.4 seed in the tournament but winds up in a four-way tie for third place. The Cobbers finish the conference season with a 6-3-2 mark. Concordia is now 11-4-3 in all games. St. Ben's, one of the teams that finished in the four-way tie, fails to make the playoffs and ends their season at 7-4-0 in the MIAC and 13-5-0 in all games.

The lone goal of the game came at the 36:45 mark when Cobber goalie Britt Reiersgord's punt was collected by Blazer forward Leah Schleppergrell and promptly one-timed into the back of the net. The goal would prove to be the game winner despite CC outshooting the Blazers 13-8 in overall shots and 9-7 in shots on goal.

The Cobbers had their best chances early in the game but couldn't get the ball past CSB keeper Shannon Strohm. CC forward Susan Obermiller routinely carved up the Blazer defense but couldn't connect on a scoring shot. She finished the game with a game-high five shots and four shots on goal.

Concordia upped their attack in the second half, outshooting St. Ben's 9-4 but could never find the back of the net.

In the end, Strohm finished with nine saves and Reiersgord had six.

The Cobbers will start their postseason by playing at MIAC regular season champion St. Thomas on Wednesday, Nov. 5 at 1:30 p.m.
