Gameday Game Recap

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/04/08)-- For the second straight conference game Concordia failed to score a goal and gave up two scores in a single half and lost. On Saturday the Cobbers conceded two goals in the first half and lost to regionally-ranked St. Thomas 3-0.

The defeat is the second straight for CC who started the season unbeaten in their first 10 games of the year. Concordia is now 7-2-3 overall and 3-2-2 in conference play. The Tommies remain unbeaten as they improve to 8-0-3 in all games and 5-0-2 in the MIAC.

The Cobbers came out flat in the first half and UST was able to take the play to CC through the middle of the field. St. Thomas scored the first of their three goals on a deflection in the 32nd minute. Concordia had limited the Tommies quality chances despite not having the run of play in the first half hour of the game. That changed when Kirsten Moran was able to corral a ball 40 yards out from goal. She then dribbled through the middle of the field and let loose a shot when she got to 25 yards away from the net. Her shot deflected off of a retreating Cobber defender and ricocheted into the left side of the net after Concordia goalie Britt Reiersgord had started to move to the right side of the goal to track the initial offering.

The second goal came less than nine minutes later. Forward Erin Sprangers got loose on the wing and was able to turn the corner on the CC defense. She then hit a crossing pass on the ground that was met by a wide open Allie Emch who calmly one-timed the ball into the net from six yards out.

Concordia stepped up their play in the second half and the shot totals were evidence of the better CC play. After being outshot 7-1 in the first half, the Cobbers held an 8-4 edge in shots in the second 45 minutes.

The game could have turned into a tighter affair in the opening minutes of play in the second half but a pair of quality chances by Cobber forwards were knocked straight into UST goalie Amanda Domeier.

The game was officially put out of reach in the 71st minute when Ann Speltz was able to loft a shot over Reiersgord from 20 yards out on the left side of the goal and find the far side netting.

For the game, the Cobbers were outshot 11-9 in total shots and 6-4 in shots on goal. The Tommies had nine corner kicks as opposed to only three for CC.

Concordia will look to rebound on Tuesday, Oct. 7 when they play at Macalester at 3 p.m.
