Gameday Game Recap

WINONA, Minn. (9/27/08)-- Concordia used a different story line to post their 2-1 win over St. Mary's in Winona on Saturday. No matter what the tale was, the end result was that the Cobbers extended their record-setting unbeaten streak to 10 games to start the season. CC is now 7-0-3 overall and 3-0-2 in the MIAC. The Cardinals fall for the second straight game and are now 3-6-1 in all games and 0-5-0 in league play.

The win also extends Concordia's mastery over St. Mary's. CC has not lost to SMU in the past 11 games.

The Cobbers had also not allowed a goal against the Cardinals in the past seasons but that changed less than 10 minutes into the game on Saturday. Amy Sibik poked home a rebound at 8:40 to give St. Mary's a surprising 1-0 lead.

Concordia failed to panic and kept up the pressure on the SMU defense. The pressure payed off less than six minutes later when sophomore Sam Johnson continued her scoring tear by putting home her eighth goal of the season at 14:38. The goal came on a free kick that was delivered into the penalty area.

The game would stay tied until just over 11 minutes into the second half. That is when Johnson struck again. She finished off a passing sequence from Maia Johnson and Susan Obermiller to net her league-leading ninth goal of the year. Johnson has now scored six goals in the past four games for CC.

That would be all Concordia would need as they continued to pound the ball into the Cardinal defensive end.  In the second half the Cobbers outshot SMU 9-1.

For the game CC held a 13-3 advantage in shots and an 8-1 edge in shots on goal. Cobber goalie Britt Reiersgord had her shutout streak of three straight games come to an end. She still has not allowed more than one goal in a game all season long. Reiersgord was not credited with a save in earning her seventh win of the year. St. Mary's goalie Mariana Sanchez stopped six shots in the losing effort.

The Cobbers will stay on the road when they play at St. Olaf on Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 4 p.m.
