Gameday Game Recap

MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/10/08)-- Concordia battled Augsburg through 110 minutes without either team scoring a goal as the two teams ended the MIAC conference opener in a 0-0 tie in double overtime. The tie keeps the Cobbers unbeaten on the year as they move to 3-0-2 overall. The Auggies are now 3-1-1.

It was a contrast in styles for the entire four periods of play. The Cobbers maintained possession in the middle part of the field, while Augsburg played more direct out of the back and earned chances by going quickly towards the goal. The Auggies had the better of the quality chances in the game as Cobber goalie Britt Reiersgord had to make three goal-saving stops. Reiersgord tipped a dead ball wide of the post and then crashed into the back of the net in the first half and then made to diving saves to tip the ball off the post in the second half.

For the game, Concordia outshot the Auggies 16-13 in total shots but Augsburg held an 11-7 edge in shots on goal.

The best Cobber chance came in the second half when CC forward Sam Johnson found herself all alone with the ball in front of the Augsburg net but her shot went straight into Auggie goalie Maggie DeGroot's hands.

In the overtime periods, both teams started to wear down as the elements took their toll on the players. Playing in a light rain in the first half and then cooler temperatures in the second frame, neither team was able to sustain long periods of posession in the overtime periods. Concordia had the better of the shots in the extra periods, outshooting Augsburg 5-1.

Both teams had four corner kicks in the game. Reiersgord finished with 11 saves for the 100 minutes and DeGroot made seven stops to preserve the scoreless tie.

The Cobbers will return to MIAC action on Saturday when they travel to St. Peter, Minn. to take on Gustavus on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 1 p.m.
