Gameday Game Recap:

MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/09/07)-- It's what makes the game soccer so great, or so infuriating, depending on your viewpoint. One team can control possession, tempo and outshoot another team but in the end wind up on the wrong end of the score. That is exactly what happened on Sunday as Concordia controlled St. Scholastica for most of the game, outshooting the Saints 17-8 overall and holding a 4-2 shots on goal advantage. Unfortunately, the final score read 1-0 in favor of St. Scholastica. The Saints scored a goal in the 86th minute on a counterattack and walked away with a hard-fought 1-0 victory.

The Cobbers had chances to open the game up in the first half but the St. Scholastica defense and CSC goalkeeper Kelly Momsen was able to thwart every CC scoring opportunity. The best chance of the game for Concordia came on from the foot of freshman Sam Johnson who broke behind the St. Scholastica defense on a through ball and went in all alone on Momsen. Momsen cut down the angle on Johnson and Johnson was forced to shoot the ball right into the oncoming keeper.

The Saints were content to let CC control possession and wait for one of their counterattacks to produce a scoring chance. They had a few in the first half and then several more in the second period, but it wasn't until the Cobbers gave the ball away in the middle of the field with just over four minutes to play when they were able to connect on the game-deciding score. Robin Johnson collected the ball and then played a perfect pass to a sprinting Shannon Kresky who got behind the CC defense. Kresky then slotted the ball into the lower right corner of the net past oncoming Cobber keeper Britt Reiersgord who had no chance to make the save on the breakaway.

The final four minutes played out with the Saints clearing the ball out of their end at every opportunity. Concordia was never able to come up with a game-tying opportunity and fell 1-0 for the second straight game.

The final scoresheet had Concordia with an 11 shot advantage. St. Scholastica had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Reiersgord came away with one save for the Cobbers, while Momsen finished with four stops.

Concordia will open conference play on Wednesday, Sept. 12 when they travel to Minneapolis, Minn. to take on Augsburg at 4 p.m.
