Game Recap:

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/25/06)-- If it was a Hollywood movie, people would walk out of the theaters shaking their heads, muttering, "no way that would ever happen in real life, it's just too sappy of an ending."

Well, the fans in attendance at the Concordia/ St. Catherine game on Wednesday got to witness a real life "Major League" story as the Cobbers - the league's perennial also-rans, won the MIAC conference championship in the very last home game for the six seniors that delivered the program from the depths of mediocrity.

Morgan Bain, Jill Fancher, Suzy Grabko, Miriam Lombardozzi, Betsy Olesen and Amy Ravenhorst all came to Concordia when the program was struggling and had finished eighth in the league and struggled to get five wins on the year. Through constant hard work and determination, the team steadily rose through the standing until this season when they finally overcame their final obstacle and claimed the championship trophy on the final home game of the season.

Ebert and Roeper would say that it couldn't have been done and the storyline is too unbelievable even for Hollywood. Bain, Fancher, Grabko, Lombardozzi, Olesen and Ravenhorst showed that sometimes there is a "too good to be true" story that really happens and that Hollywood doesn't have the corner on the "feel good" market.

None of the events of Wednesday could have been predicted before the game started as Concordia limped into the day on a two-game losing streak and searching for their mid-season magic that thrust them to the top of the standings. Add that to the fact that Macalester, who was lurking in the wings should the Cobbers fall down, had not lost in the past 43 games.

That all started to slowly change when Concordia took the field at the Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex for the final time in the regular season.

The Cobbers went on the offensive in the first five minutes and then movie magic happened for the first time on the day when Grabko, usually known for her assist ability, headed home her first goal of the season. Lifted by the goal, the Cobbers kept firing away at the Wildcat goal and were rewarded when Bain knocked home the second goal of the game just before halftime.

For Bain it was her eighth goal of the year and 58th of her career. It was also her third point of the game and movers her career total to 132 which is only six away from breaking the all-time school record for points in a career.

Grabko would add another head goal eight minutes after the break to complete her storybook afternoon.

The only two storylines that were hanging on the cliff were the Cobber shutout and the chance to earn the conference championship.

Sophomore goalie Britt Reiersgord made sure the shutout was kept intact. Late in the game she came out to snuff a mini-breakaway from the top of the box. She finished the game with three saves and earned her 10th shutout of the season and 18th of her career. Both marks are program records.

The last bombshell was dropped shortly after the game was over. After the players shook hands and gathered with parents and friends to talk about the day's events - word came over the loudspeaker that Carleton had pulled of the upset in overtime against Macalester. The Cobber players at first stared in disbelief and then erupted in total joy as their preseason goal had finally been realized.

The six seniors gathered for one final picture and then walked away into the sunset together, ready to start on the sequel.

Concordia will close out the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 28 at St. Ben's at 1 p.m. The Cobbers will then host a conference semifinal game on Wednesday, Nov. 1 at 2 p.m. against the team that finishes in fourth place.
