Game Recap:

LA CROSSE, Wis. (10/23/06)-- You'll have to forgive the Concordia women's soccer team if they seem a little short when they get asked how their mid-semester break went. The Cobbers took off on a two-game road trip to Chicago, Ill. and La Crosse, Wis. looking to keep their season-long momentum rolling and striving to further their position in the regional rankings. What they returned home with was a pair of losses and only two days to get back on track as they make their bid for the first MIAC championship in program history.

The second defeat on the blues tour came on Monday at the hands of the UW-La Crosse Eagles. Concordia hammered La Crosse throughout the opening half, building a 16-1 advantage in shots, but was never able to score. The Cobbers then conceded a goal less than six minutes into the second half and fell 1-0 to the Eagles.

The loss is the second straight for Concordia after fashioning a seven-game unbeaten streak. The Cobbers are now 10-4-2 on the year. The Eagles win for the third straight game and the fifth time in the past six games. La Crosse is now 8-4-3 on the season after starting the year 3-3-3.

The tone of the game was decided in the first half when the Cobbers pummeled the Eagles net but could not get the critical opening goal of the game. All told, Concordia had 16 shots in the opening period to go along with a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Allowed to stay even at the break, La Crosse turned the game completely upside down when they struck for the game-winning goal at 50:53. The goal came after the Eagles were awarded a free kick from 40 yards out and played the ball into the penalty area. The resulting play saw the ball carom around in the area before Amy Todd was able to poke the ball into the net.

Unable to play the ball through the back of the Eagles defense, Concordia had numerous offensive attacks stymied by errant passing attempts.

In the end, the Cobbers had 22 overall shots and 11 shots on goal but none found the back of the net. Senior midfielder Miriam Lombardozzi led the way for Concordia as she had a game-high six total shots with four on goal. Fellow seniors Morgan Bain and Amy Ravenhorst also found space to take multiple-shot attempts. Bain had five shots in the game and Ravenhorst added four.

Cobber goalie Britt Reiersgord made four saves in the game and was saddled with her third loss of the year. Eagles goalkeeper Amanda Clark stopped 11 shots to earn her fourth shutout of the season.

Concordia now sets their sights on grabbing the MIAC regular season title. If Concordia wins their two remaining league games, they will win the championship and earn home field advantage throughout the conference playoffs. The Cobbers will host St. Catherine on Wednesday, Oct. 25 at 3:30 p.m. and then play at St. Ben's on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 1 p.m. Concordia is currently 7-0-2 in the MIAC and leads second-place Macalester who owns a 6-0-3 record in conference play.
