Game Recap:

CHICAGO, Ill. (10/21/06)-- There are not many sports where if you fall behind by two scores before the first nine minutes expire you can feel good about your chances to win. That is especially true in soccer and it was doubly true on Saturday where Concordia gave up two goals in the first nine minutes against regionally-ranked University of Chicago and fell 2-1.

The loss snaps the Cobbers' seven-game unbeaten streak. It is also only the third loss of the entire year for Concordia as they drop to 10-3-2 overall. Chicago wins their 15th straight game at home and runs their home unbeaten string to 30 games. The Maroons are now 10-4-1 on the year.

The Cobbers entered the game ranked fourth in the NSCAA Central Region and were closely followed by Chicago who entered the game ranked sixth in the latest poll. The two teams were fighting for a potential leg up in the selection process for the NCAA playoffs. That leg up was securely on the side of Chicago after they blitzed the normally stout Cobber defense for a pair of goals before the game was even ten minutes old.

The Maroons scored the opening goal at 5:32 when Christine Farmer scored the first of her two goals on a corner kick. Her shot hit the post and she then followed the miss with her 11th goal of the season. Farmer repeated her success at 8:40 when she took a pass from Jordan Pouliot and dribbled past Cobber goalie Britt Reiersgord to score the eventual game-winning goal.

Shocked by the turn of events in the first nine minutes, it took Concordia a full half hour before finally getting the ability to string passes together. It wasn't until after the halftime break before the Cobbers actually started to play the style of ball that brought them to a 10-win season.

They were rewarded in the 67th minute when senior Amy Ravenhorst scored her fourth goal of the year. Freshman Vanessa Kowalski was awarded the assist on the play.

The Cobbers were never able to secure the equalizer in the final 23 minutes of play despite having the majority of the offensive play in the second half.

In the end, Chicago was credited with 16 overall shots as opposed to only 11 for Concordia. The Maroons had a smaller 7-6 edge in shots on goal. Reiersgord made five saves and lost for only the second time all season. Chicago goalie Amanda Sutter also had five saves in earning her third win of the year.

Concordia will continue their mid-semester break road trip when they play at UW-La Crosse on Monday, Oct. 23 at 3 p.m.
