Game Scoring: Goals: No Scoring Game Rewind: Match Stats: Final Stats vs. Macalester - Online! Game Recap: ST. PAUL, Minn. (10/14/06)-- Pop quiz: Question: When is a tie as good as a win? Answer: When the tie keeps you in first place in the MIAC standings with only two games left to play. That scenario is exactly what happened in St. Paul, Minn. on Saturday when Concordia played to a 0-0 double overtime tie against defending conference champion Macalester. The draw keeps the Cobbers in driver's seat for their first conference championship in program history. Concordia is now 7-0-2 in league play which gives them 16 total points. Macalester remains in second place with 13 points (5-0-3) and having played one game less than the Cobbers. If Concordia defeats St. Catherine and St. Ben's in their final two MIAC games, they will win their first conference crown. The tie also moves the Cobbers' overall record to 10-2-2 on the year. The biggest news from the game came by way of the Cobber defense that helped goalie Britt Reiersgord set a new program record for most shutouts in a single season (9) and most shutouts in a career (17). Last year Reiersgord tied teammate Ashley Liegakos' record of eight season shutouts. The "bagel" also drops Riersgord's goals against average to 0.30. She has also been in the goal for all 10 of Concordia's wins this season. The game had all the markings of a classic NCAA Tournament contest; two well-coached teams that would not let either team's talented offense to have a solid chance at the goal. Concordia's defense did a great job of handling Macalester's All-American forward Annie Borton, while the Scot's kept Cobber record-setting scorer Morgan Bain away from the goal for much of the game. In the end, Concordia outshot Macalester 15-6 but conceded the Scots an 11-6 edge in corner kicks. The best chance of the game came from Bain when she bounced a header off of the post in the second half. Junior forward Rachel Lewis also had a quality opportunity in the first overtime when she found herself six yards out from goal with the ball on her foot after a pass from Bain. Unfortunately Lewis was never able to settle the ball into a shooting position and the chance was quickly cleaned up by the Macalester defense. Reiersgord with six saves in the game. She also did a solid job of corralling any of the Macalester crosses and corner kick services. Macalester goalie Jenny Lee made nine saves to earn her seventh shutout of the year. Concordia will take a break from MIAC play. They will travel to Illinois to take on the University of Chicago in a key regional game on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 4 p.m. They will finish up their mid-semester road trip by playing at UW- La Crosse on Monday, Oct. 23 at 3 p.m. |
