Game Recap:

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/10/06)-- Concordia decided to turn the clock back to 2003 in their game against Augsburg on Tuesday in Moorhead. The only thing missing was throw back uniforms.

The Cobbers returned to a high-octane offense, and just enough defense, to beat the Auggies 3-2 and take one more step to their first MIAC regular season championship in program history. The win keeps Concordia on top of the conference with an undefeated 7-0-1 record with three games remaining in league play. The Cobbers also become the first twm in the MIAC to reach the 10-win plateau, CC is now 10-2-1 overall.

On a day where the weather was as big of a story as the two teams playing, Concordia was able to break on the board first going against a steady headwind in the first half. Rachel Lewis scored the first of her two goals when she tapped in a rebound shot after senior Suzy Grabko served the ball in from the wing and Augsburg goalie Maggie DeGroot wasn't able to cleanly handle the cross.

Leading 1-0 and holding the majority of the possession, the Cobbers looked like a sure thing to take a 1-0 lead into the break and gain control of the wind. Unfortunately, Auggie defender Felicia Faison had other plans as she pounded home a shot after a goalmouth scramble from a corner kick. The goal broke Concordia's conference shutout streak at 693:54 - the longest in program history.

The second half turned into a tale of two different teams. Concordia was able to control the ball and take their chances off of sustained offensive pressure, while Augsburg waited for the counterattack and pounced on any quick strike.

The Cobber control game struck first when Morgan Bain headed home a shot from inside the six-yard box to give Concordia a 2-1 lead. For Bain, it was her team-leading seventh goal of the year and moved her two points closer to becoming the program's all-time scoring leader. She now has 129 career points and needs only nine more to break Angela Tohm's record of 137 set back in 1996.

Augsburg countered less than six minutes later on a deftly played shot by Katie Medd that was lofted over Concordia goalie Britt Reiersgord and released just before the Cobber defense converged on the sprinting Medd.

From there, both teams traded opportunities but not real chances. The final goal of the game came with just under three minutes remaining. After Miriam Lombardozzi settled the ball in the middle of the field, she sent a looping pass to the front line where Lewis turned on her defender, sprinted onto the ball and headed it into the goal just before DeGroot was able to get to the ball.

It was Lewis' fifth goal of the year and fourth game-winner of her career.

In the end, Concordia's possession offense produced 20 shots on goal, while the Auggies had to settle for six shots from their counterattack.

Reiersgord made two saves in the game to earn her 10th win of the year. DeGroot stopped five shots in the losing effort.

Concordia now turns their attention to defending MIAC Champion Macalester. The Cobbers travel to St. Paul to take on the Scots on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 2:30 p.m. The game is a rematch of the past two conference tournament championship games.
