Game Recap:
WINONA, Minn. (09/30/06)-- Teams that play for championships, and earn trips to the post season year after year, find a way to win close games no matter how long it takes to score.
That was the case on Saturday in Winona as Concordia was able to score a goal in the final five minutes of play against St. Mary's and come away with a 1-0 victory. The win keeps the Cobbers unbeaten, and atop, the MIAC with a 4-0-1 record as they try and earn a spot in the MIAC playoffs for the fourth consecutive season. The Cardinals, who were outshot 30-4 on the day, see their conference record fall to 2-2-1. They are currently in sixth place in the MIAC and if the playoffs started on Monday, would be on the outside looking in at the upper echelon teams in the conference.
Concordia was also able to extend its shutout streak. The Cobbers have not allowed a goal in their first five conference games and have rattled off three straight shutouts. They are the only team in the league that has not conceded a goal in conference play. Concordia is now 7-2-1 overall with their only two losses coming at the hands of teams that are currently ranked in the top 12 of the nation. St. Mary's, buoyed by a non-conference schedule that doesn't include a team with a winning record, has their overall record slide to 8-2-1 on the season. The Cardinals have now scored only one goal in three games against teams in the top five of the conference.
The game was a decidedly one-sided affair, as Concordia continually attacked the Cardinal end of the field. However, the Cobbers were turned away by a tight St. Mary's defense and the excellent goalkeeping of all-conference netminder Jennifer Johnson. Johnson made 15 saves in the game, which included seven in the first half and eight in the second period.
On the other side of the field, the Cobber defense rarely allowed the Cardinals enough space to attack the CC defensive third of the field, and held St. Mary's to only two shots on net the entire 90 minutes. Cobber goalie Britt Reiersgord made both saves to earn her sixth shutout of the season and seventh overall win. She also lowered her goals against average to meager 0.22.
With the score tied in final minutes of the contest, Concordia record-breaking scoring threat Morgan Bain was able to beat Johnson to a ball that was poked free of a goalmouth scramble by teammate Megan Rice. Bain touched the ball around Johnson and calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net for the game-winning score at the 84:58 mark.
Concordia's defense made sure nothing got through in the final minutes of played and preserved the fifth straight shutout over the Cardinals. Concordia has now won eight straight over St. Mary's and has not conceded a goal to the Cardinals in 489 consecutive minutes.
The Cobbers will continue with their three-game road trip when they play at Carleton on Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 4 p.m.
