Game Recap: MOORHEAD, Minn. (09/27/06)-- Concordia had five different players score goals as they pounded Hamline 5-0 in a MIAC conference game played at Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex in Moorhead, Minn. on Wednesday. The five goals scored by the Cobbers is the most they have scored in a conference game since the 2004 season when they also beat Hamline 5-0. The Cobbers scored at the 5:52 mark and continued to hammer the Piper net for the remainder of the game. Concordia finished with 32 total shots and 10 shots on net. Hamline took five shots total in the game and was only able to put up two shots on goal. The victory keeps the Cobbers' unbeaten in the MIAC. Concordia is now 3-0-1 in conference play and 6-2-1 overall. Hamline remains winless in the MIAC and drops to 0-3-0 in the conference and 1-4-1 overall. The shutout for Concordia keeps their streak of not allowing a goal in conference play intact. They are currently the only team in the MIAC that has not allowed a goal in league action. The Cobbers have posted four shutouts in the MIAC and six total shutouts on the year. A pair of defenders staked Concordia to a 2-0 lead before the game was less than 10 minutes old. Both goals came from corner kick situations. The first goal was netted by central defender Betsy Olesen who played the ball in off of a rebound. The original corner kick was put back towards the net on a shot and the subsequent rebound shot from Suzy Grabko was also blocked. Olesen then stepped up and tucked the ball past the Hamline goalie before anyone had a chance to play the ball. Just before the 10-minute mark, Concordia was awarded another corner and played the ball long to Andrea Purcell who was stationed on the far side of the penalty area. Purcell calmly settled the ball and then looped a shot over the goalie's head and into the back of the net. For Purcell it was the first goal of her collegiate career. The Cobbers continued to pummel the Piper defensive end. Hamline was barely able to get the ball out of their defensive third of the field before it was played right back in. Five minutes later, Concordia head coach Dan Weiler decided to pull the majority of his starting eleven off the field. At the 15:50 mark, Weiler substituted seven players and the Cobbers did not miss a beat. Concordia continued to relentlessly attack the Hamline goal and put up a third score on the board just before the break. The third goal was the best of the quartet as freshman Megan Rice neatly flicked home a serve from defender Andrea Flynn with her head to beat Hamline goalie Samantha Winkleman to the far post. The play started in the middle of the field, got switched to the wing where Flynn took a pair of touches and then found Rice's head for the goal. After both teams switched goalkeepers at half, Concordia lengthened its lead at the 56:53 mark. Freshman Vanessa Kowalski connected on a shot from just outside the penalty area that handcuffed newly inserted goalie Andrea Eilertson and found the back of the net. It was Kowalski's first goal of her college career. The final score came from the foot of Maia Johnson. Johnson received the ball at the top of the penalty area and moved across the field before taking a touch and delivering the ball into the upper corner of the goal. Hamline was never able to mount a sustained attack and second-half goalie Ashley Liegakos easily preserved the shutout that was started by sophomore Britt Reiersgord. Reiersgord gets credit for her sixth win of the year and improves to 6-1-1. Winkelman, the Pipers' starting goalie made four saves and was handed the loss. Concordia had a decisive 11-1 edge in corner kicks to go along with their 32-5 advantage in shots. The Cobbers were whistled for six fouls, while the Pipers committed five. The Cobbers will travel to Winona, Minn. on Saturday, Sept. 30 for a key conference battle with St. Mary's. The game is the first part of the Cobber women's/men's soccer doubleheader and will start at noon.
