Game Rewind: Match Stats: Final Stats vs. St. Olaf Game Recap: NORTHFIELD, Minn. (09/23/06)-- In sports, timing is everything. Just ask Cobber senior defender Jill Fancher. The Concordia women's soccer entered Saturday's game against St. Olaf in Northfield, Minn. without having scored a goal in the past two games. They then finished the first half against the Oles with the streak still intact. Enter Fancher, who had never scored a conference goal in her career. Two minutes after the break, that all changed as Fancher uncorked a screaming shot that found the side of the net to break Concordia's scoreless streak and propel the Cobbers to a 2-0 victory over the Oles. The win snaps Concordia's two-game winless streak and pushes the team into a tie for second place in the MIAC with a 2-0-1 record. The Cobbers up their overall mark to 5-2-1. St. Olaf loses for the third time in the last four games and falls to 4-3 on the year, after starting the season 3-0. The Oles remain winless in league play at 0-3. The Cobbers had failed to score against Gustavus last Saturday in their 0-0 double overtime tie. CC was then held off the score sheet on Sunday when they lost to No.6-ranked UW-Eau Claire 1-0 in the final minute of the second overtime. On Saturday, the Cobbers started slow and were only able to put up three shots in the opening 45 minutes. The complexion of the game, and possibly the season, changed when Fancher controlled the ball from outside the St. Olaf penalty area and hammered home her first goal of the season. From there, the Cobbers attacked with more confidence and were able to draw the Oles out of their tight 5-3-2 formation. The game opened up and both teams created more chances. The second CC goal came with just over 10 minutes to play when freshman Megan Rice got loose to fire a shot on the Ole net. Junior forward Rachel Lewis was in the right place at the right time and popped home the rebound to give Concordia the 2-0 cushion. In the end, Concordia outshot St. Olaf 11-2. The Cobber defense continues its stingy ways. They have now posted five shutouts in the team's first eight games. They are one of only two teams in the conference that has not allowed a goal in MIAC play. Cobber keeper Britt Reiersgord recorded her fifth shutout. Although she was not credited with a save in the game, she stopped several would-be Ole scoring chances before they had a chance to develop. Concordia will return home to play Hamline on Wednesday, Sept. 27 at 4 p.m. at the Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex.
