Game Rewind:

Match Stats: Final Stats vs. #6 UW-Eau Claire

Key Point of the Game: With less than 1:00 left in the second overtime Concordia failed to clear the ball out of their defensive third on two occasions and had the ball bounce right onto the foot of a waiting Eau Claire player who played the ball wide for the game-winning shot.

The Quote: "I was really proud of the way the team played today. We showed great heart and character in competing without some key players and playing against a tough opponent." Cobber head coach Dan Weiler.
The Leaders: The Cobber defense held the potent UW-Eau Claire offense scoreless for 109 minutes. They played much of that stretch without central defender Chelsee McLaughlan who was injured earlier in the contest. The CC backline helped Concordia amass a streak of 444 minutes without conceding a goal.

Game Recap:

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (09/17/06)-- Bitten by a hyperactive injury bug and playing their second overtime game in as many days, Concordia battled for 109 minutes against No.6-ranked UW-Eau Claire before finally allowing a goal and losing 1-0 in double overtime.

The Cobbers and Blugolds locked up in a defensive battle throughout regulation and into both overtimes before Eau Claire was able to take advantage of a pair of missed clearing attempts in the final minute of the second overtime and come away with the one-goal victory.

The loss for the Cobbers is the second of the season, with both coming against teams ranked in the top 25 of the nation. Concordia is now 4-2-1 on the season. The Blugolds remain unbeaten and lift their overall record to 6-0-0.

The goal allowed by the Cobbers in the second overtime period broke a streak of 444 minutes without having allowed a goal. Concordia had posted three consecutive shutouts coming into the game and had allowed only two goals in the first six games of the season.

One of the key themes for Concordia throughout the game was injuries. The Cobbers played the entire game without record-breaking scorer Morgan Bain who sat out due to injuries accumulated in the Gustavus game played on Saturday. To make matters even worse, the Cobbers watched as their other two top forwards fell to injuries during the course of the game and were forced to finish with a makeshift attacking front-line. The injuries were not confined to the offensive side of the field, midway through the game central defender Chelsee McLaughlan went down with an injury and did return.

Despite losing key members of the starting lineup, Concordia persevered throughout the game and held the Blugold offense in check for most of the afternoon.

Concordia took control of the game in the early stages, dominating for the first 30 minutes. After that, the nationally-ranked Blugolds started to find their flow and take it to the Cobber backline.

Control of the second half was held by UW-Eau Claire. However, neither team was able to find the back of the net and the two squads headed into overtime deadlocked at 0-0.

Eau Claire dominated the first overtime period, outshooting Concordia but was not able to get the ball past CC keeper Britt Reiersgord.

With the game winding down in the second overtime and the contest appearing to be heading to a 0-0 draw, the Blugolds capitalized on a pair of bad clearances and scored the lone goal of the game.

After two Concordia players failed to clear the ball, Maria Iaizzo collected the ball for UW-Eau Claire and made a backheel pass out wide to Emily Meisinger. Meisinger, running away from goal, turned and shot the ball in one motion. The ball lofted over the top of Reiersgord and spun off the far post and into the net for the winning score. For Meisinger, it was her first goal of the year.

In the end, the Blugolds outshot Concordia 8-3 and held a 3-2 margin in corner kicks.

The Cobbers will have a week off to rehabilitate and get ready for their next game. Concordia will face St. Olaf in Northfield, Minn. on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 4 p.m.
