Game Rewind:

Match Stats: Final Stats vs. Grinnell

Key Point of the Game: Concordia was finally able to connect offensively for a full 90 minutes against Grinnell. The key point in the game came from the very opening minute when the Cobbers were able to get behind the Grinnell defense.

The Quote: "We played a complete game for the first time this season. It was nice to be able to take it to our opponent for a full 90 minutes, except we hit the post the crossbar and the post too much." Cobber senior defender Betsy Olesen on the Cobbers' 2-0 dominating win over the Pioneers.
The Leaders: Forward Morgan Bain scored both Concordia goals and took 12 shots in the game. The four points puts Bain 16 shy of setting the Cobber program record for most points in a career.

Game Recap:

ST. PETER, Minn. (09/10/06)-- Concordia opens MIAC regular-season play on Tuesday against St. Thomas. The Cobbers spent Sunday afternoon making sure that all components were in working order and primed for a run at the MIAC title.

Concordia's offense finally clicked into high gear as they pounded the Grinnell goal for 31 shots en route to a 2-0 victory, their third straight since dropping the opener to No. 25 UC-Santa Cruz.

Not surprisingly for the Cobbers, senior forward Morgan Bain had a big hand in the final score. The highly proficient goal scorer produced both of the Concordia goals and finished the game with an impressive 12 total shots, seven of which were on net. She also had at least two other shots that clanked off the crossbar and goal post.

The Cobbers were finally able to play a full game without sputtering through lackluster periods of the game. The defense shut down the Pioneers, allowing only two shots the entire game, while the offense routinely found space behind the overmatched Grinnell back line.

Despite the control of the game, Concordia was unable to break onto the scoreboard until the 43rd minute of the game. Bain snuck in behind the Pioneer defense and flicked a ball with her head over the Pioneer goalie and into the back of the net. For Bain it was her second head goal in as many games after not scoring with her head for the first three seasons of her collegiate career.

Grinnell stayed in the game until the final seven minutes as goalie Liz Carrier was able to turn back chance after chance in the second half. Carrier finished with 13 saves in the game, seven of which came in the final 45 minutes.

Concordia, and Bain, put the game away for good at the 83:30 mark when she finished off a passing sequence that started with defender Andrea Purcell, went through midfielder Amy Ravenhorst before finally reaching Bain and ultimately the back of the net.

Cobber goalie Britt Reiersgord made only two saves in the game to pick up her second shutout of the season. She is now 3-0 on the year and has only allowed one goal in 275 minutes of action.

Concordia will open the MIAC regualr season on Tuesday when they host St. Thomas at 4 p.m. at the Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex.
