Final Meet Results - Day 1 Results | Day 2 Results |
Day 1 Recap | Day 2 Recap

On a course that played considerably easier from Saturday, golfers in the second day of the Concordia Invitational at Wildflower Golf Course in Detroit Lakes, Minn. used almost ideal conditions to shoot low scores and tighten the race for both the team title and the individual championship.

In the end, Southwest State University shot a 316 - the second best team score of the day - to post a 642 and hang on and claim the outright team championship. The Mustangs held off a hard-charging University of North Dakota team that fired a second round-best score of 319 and finished one shot behind at 643.

Individually, Carley Roach from Augustana claimed medalist honors at the tournament by backing up her first round score of 79 with a final day total of 76. Her two-day total of 155 tied with Southwest State's Erin Oakland, but Roach won the championship because of the tie-breaker based on the NCAA scorecard playoff system.

All 16 teams in the competition improved on their scores from the opening day. The biggest jump came from the University of South Dakota who shaved 30 shots off their first round total. The Coyotes finished in fourth place with a score of 662 (346-316).

Three golfers tied for third place in the individual competition with a total of 156. Kelli Groff from Gustavus shot a consistent 78-78, while Maureen Hardwick from St. Thomas improved four strokes from her opening round of 80 (80-76) and UND's Sarah Luken improved by two strokes in the final round (79-77).

The biggest individual jump of the day in the top 30 came from St. Ben's golfer Megan Sand. After grinding out an 85 in the first round, Sand delivered a 76 in the final round (161) to jump 13 places and finish in a tie for seventh.

Roach, Hardwick, Sand and Tricia Nelson from St. Thomas all posted the low round of the day with a 76.

Concordia, the host team, held steady in 11th place. The Cobbers followed up their 368 in the first round with a season-best 350. Freshman Afton Pender continues to be the number-one golfer on the team. She finished in a tie for 20th after posting rounds of 83-85 (168). Christie Brink was the only other Concordia golfer to crack the top 30. She fell two strokes off her opening round score of 85 and carded a 172 (85-87).

The Cobbers will return to action when they compete in the Dragon Invitational on Sept. 17-18 at the Meadows Golf Course in Moorhead.
