Moorhead, Minn.-- Despite falling behind early in game one, Concordia rallied and came away with a hard fought 3-1 (31-29, 30-25, 27-30, 30-25) victory over Mayville State on Friday night. The Cobbers remain unbeaten on the season, posting their record-setting sixth straight victory to start the year.

The Comets, winless in their first 11 matches, battled the Cobbers until the very end as they took Concordia to the limit in each of the four games. The loss in game three for Concordia snapped a 16-game unbeaten streak that the Cobbers had fashioned to start the season.

Mayville State started quickly, jumping to a lead of 4-0 and 8-2 at the beginning of game one. Concordia turned the tides by winning nine of the next 12 points to even the score at 11-11. The teams traded points until the Comets broke away and threatened to take the opening game of the match. Leading 26-24, Mayville State scored three straight points and pushed the Cobbers into five straight game points. The youthful Cobbers showed their resilient nature by winning seven consecutive points to take the fist game 31-29.

The second game started in the same fashion as the first. Mayville broke to an early 4-1 lead only to watch Concordia come back and tie the game at 10-10. Unlike game one, the Cobbers did not have a slump towards the end of the game and steadily pulled away to win 30-25.

The third game went back and forth with no team being able to pull away by more than three points. With the game tied at 24-24, the Comets won four straight points and six of the final nine to win by three at 30-27.

The match was decided in the fourth game when Concordia outscored Mayville 10-5 down the stretch after the game was tied at 20-20.

Three different Cobbers finished with kill totals in double digits. Danielle Norby led the way with a team-high 16 kills. That total is also a career-high for the freshman Norby. Becca Shane recorded 13 kills to go along with Michelle Honek’s 11. Jill Hance had a match-high 45 assists. That assist total is also a career-high for Hance. Anna Walden recorded a season-best 27 digs.

Mayville State was led by the thundering attack of Maragaret Thompson. Thompson finished with a match-high 19 kills and an attack percentage of .326 in 46 attack chances. Tina Stevens had 41 assists and Dru James totaled 29 digs in the losing effort.

Concordia will open conference play when they host St. Thomas on Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 7:00pm. The Cobbers will then host the annual Concordia Invitational on Sept. 16-17.
