LAST YEAR’S MATCH RECAP: Concordia remedied their two-match losing streak by beating St. Thomas 3-2 (28-30, 30-25, 30-27, 23-30, 15-7) and in the process clinched an MIAC playoff berth.

Becca Shane carried the Cobber offense through the five-game marathon. Shane tied her career high in kills with 26, and finished with a team-high .455 attack percentage. She also had five blocks. Jacki Barten and Amy Fitzner were second on the team in kills with 14 each. Barten also had five blocks in the winning effort. Jessica Walden had 43 assists, which pushes her over the 1,000 assist barrier for the third straight season. Emily Gilbertson finished with a team-high 13 digs

St. Thomas was led by Kelly Fitzpatrick who finished with 16 kills. Sarah Rainey had 48 assits for the Tommies, while Rachel Dosch collected 17 digs.

SERIES HISTORY: The win last year for the Cobbers snapped a four-match losing streak at the hands of the Tommies. St. Thomas has won seven of the past nine matches between the two teams...three of the last four matches have gone to five games. The Tommies hold a 2-1 edge in those matches...Concordia won the first three matches of the series...the longest winning streak in the series is seven matches. St. Thomas defeated Concordia seven straight times from 1989-93...There have been only seven three-game sweeps in the 35-match series. The last time there was a sweep was in 2002, before then it was 1992. St. Thomas won both of those matches. UST holds a 4-3 edge in the seven sweeps.

(What you need to know about today’s Concordia-St. Thomas match-up)

- The Concordia volleyball team is off to their best start in program history. The Cobbers are currently 6-0 and have a total game record of 18-1.
- The Cobbers have a 14-match home winning streak.
- Concordia is 2-0 at home this season, having defeated UM-Morris 3-0 and Mayville State 3-1. The last time Concordia lost at home was on October 22, 2003, when St. Thomas pulled off a 3-2 nail biter.
- Concordia junior middle hitter Becca Shane leads the team in kills with 66. She now has 802 for her career.
Six matches into the season and we already have our first milestone. Freshman setter Jill Hance recorded a career-best 45 assists against Mayville State and now has an even 100 for the season.
- Concordia will host their annual Concordia Invitational Tournament this weekend. The Cobbers will play UM-Morris on Friday at 2:00pm. They will also play St. Boniface at 4:30pm and then finish off the first day by playing the University of Sioux Falls at 7:00pm. - Concordia will close out the tournament on Saturday when the play Northwestern at 10:00am. All matches will be played in Olson Forum.
- The Tommies have a win over No. 3-ranked New York University thus far and a pair of 3-1 tournament finishes.
UST is hitting .296 through six matches led by Senior Erika Wetzel who’s hitting .340 while averaging 3.93 kpg, 3.97 dpg and 0.41 bpg.
- St. Thomas has six MIAC matches in a 15-day stretch beginning Sept. 21.
