Concordia won the first two games against Augsburg but then lost three straight and fell 3-2 to have their five-match win streak end.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (10/15/09)-- Last week No.18-ranked Concordia staged a pair of late-match rallies and came away with a pair of conference wins. On Thursday in Minneapolis the Cobbers had the tables turned as they won the first two games against Augsburg but then watched the Auggies reel off three straight to claim the 3-2 (25-18, 25-16, 19-25, 20-25, 10-15) victory.

The loss snaps the Cobbers' five-match winning streak and smashed CC's hopes of finishing the night in a three-way tie for the MIAC lead. Instead, Concordia drops to 5-2 in league play and into a fourth-place with Augsburg. The Cobbers are now 12-6 overall. The Auggies beat CC for the first time in nine tries and move to an identical 5-2 in the MIAC and 16-10 overall.

The Cobbers looked like they would breeze to a three-game sweep as they posted a 25-18 win in game 1 and then a 25-16 victory in game 2. That's when the roof caved in on Concordia. CC allowed Augsburg to gain momentum in the third game by falling behind 10-5. The Auggies then extended the lea to 11 points at 20-9 before the Cobbers staged a mini rally and got to within five at 22-17. Augsburg then won three of the next five points to claim the win. The fourth game was almost identical as the Auggies took charge by winning the early points and grabbing an 8-4 lead. They made it a six-point lead at 18-12 before CC rallied to close the gap to 18-16. An Augsburg timeout was followed bya 5-2 Auggie run that kept CC at arms length and helped capture the win.

The fifth game featured eight tie scores and four lead changes as Concordia tried to claw their way back to an overall win. In the end it was a 6-1 Augsburg run after the score was tied at 9-9 that clipped the Cobbers' victory hopes.

Concordia finished the match by hitting .156 as a team. The Cobbers hit above .200 in the first two games but then couldn't get above the .154 mark the rest of the way. Augsburg was the exact opposite. After hitting below .200 in the opening two games, they found their attack rhythm and finished with attack percentages of .375, .216 and .226.

Jenna Green and Katie Vohnoutka led the CC offense. Green had 16 kills and a career-high 33 digs. Her previous high was 24. Vohnoutka had a match-high 17 kills and a career-high seven blocks. Amy Sykora had 48 assists and has had at least 40 assists in three straight matches.

Concordia will have almost a week off to prepare for conference co-leader St. Olaf. The Cobbers will host the Oles on Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m.
