ST. PETER, Minn. (10/24/08)--In a conference battle between nationally ranked teams, No.12-ranked Concordia and No.20-ranked Gustavus waged a classic MIAC battle that went to five sets and was determined by the final five points of the match. The Cobbers dropped the first two sets against the Gusties on Friday in St. Peter but then rallied back to take the next two before being edged in the fifth set 21-25, 23-25, 27-25, 25-21, 10-15. The loss snaps a 10-match winning streak for CC and pushes them into a battle for playoff position with several teams in the MIAC. Concordia is now 18-3 overall and 6-2 in league play.
Cobber freshman Katie Vohnoutka continued her hot streak. She posted a career-high 19 kills and led all players in that statistical category. She also finished the five-set match by hitting .298. Vohnoutka added 16 digs and three service aces. A pair of CC players had 10 kills each. Jenna Green had 10 kills to go along with 24 digs and Abby Scheel came away with 10 kills and two blocks. Allie Burnside came off the bench to record a career-high 33 digs on the night. Amy Sykora led the team in assists with 28.
As a team, Concordia hit .159 as compared to .199 for Gustavus (23-3, 7-2). The Gusties, who have now won eight straight and 10 of the past 11, had 7.0 team blocks on the night and had 18 more digs than CC.
Like Concordia, GAC had three players in double figures in kills. Angela Ahrendt had 15 winners to lead the team. Emily Klein was a force on defense all noght long and had a match-high 42 digs. Bridget Burtzel led theGustavus offense by posting 63 assists in the match.
Concordia will head right back into the thick of conference play when they square off against Carleton on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 3 p.m. in Northfield.
