| MATCH RECAP:
MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/15/08)--No.13-ranked Concordia used the momentum they gathered from their four wins at the Border Battle Tournament over the weekend to sweep Hamline 25-22, 25-23, 25-20 and post their ninth straight win. Of the nine straight wins, seven have been by three-set sweeps. The Cobbers are now 17-2 overall and are 6-1 in the MIAC.
Cobber freshman Katie Vohnoutka continued her upward learning curve in 2008 as she had a career-high 16 kills to pace CC. Vohnoutka has posted at least nine kills in five of the past seven matches, has at least 15 kills in three of those matches and has 78 total kills during that stretch. She now has 136 kills on the season and is second on the team in that category. Against the Pipers Vohnoutka had a match-high .469 hitting percentage. In her last seven matches, she has an eye-popping .363 attack percentage.
The Cobbers had to rally in the first set to overcome a Piper team that was set on coming away with the upset. Hamline bolted to a 7-2 lead in set No.1 before CC won nine of the next 13 points to tie the set at 11-11. The set would stay tight until the teams were tied at 17-17. From there, Concordia would rattle off five straight points to grab control of the set, and for that matter the match. The Cobbers used that five-point streak to record a 25-22 win in the opener.
The second set was another close affair with neither team being able to open up more than a three-point lead. The Cobbers were able to grab the second set at the wire as they won three of the final four points after the score was tied at 22-22. Concordia was aided by a pair of attack errors to take a 24-22 lead and then after Hamline got a kill by Amanda Booth, CC finished out the set when Vohnoutka knocked one of her 16 winners in the match.
Concordia tried to put the third set away early, the raced to leads of 10-5 and 15-10 but couldn't shake the Pipers. Hamline rallied from a 20-12 deficit and cut the gap to 22-18 before CC got points off of a Vohnoutka kill, a winner from Maggie Olson and an attack error from thr HU offense to push the final score to 25-20.
Vohnoutka was the only Concordia player with more than seven kills against the Pipers. Fellow freshman Jenna Green added seven kills and posted 18 digs. Maggie Olson had six kills on the night and bumped her season total over the 100-kill mark. Amy Sykora led CC with 17 assists on the night and Jill Hance chipped in 14 to help the Cobber offense finish with a .157 attack percentage. Senior Anna Tinkham had a match-high 27 digs and Valerie Glynn compiled a match-high five blocks.
Hamline (14-9/2-5 MIAC) was led by Emily Amici who had 10 kills and 10 digs on the night. Anita Rojas added nine kills and had a team-high .161 hitting percentage and senior Amanda Booth had eight kills. Jackie Kelly led all players with 29 assists. She also came away with a team-high 19 digs.
Concordia will have a six-day break before hosting UM-Morris on Tuesday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m.
