| TOURNAMENT RECAP:
ST. PAUL, Minn. (10/11/08)-- This just in: the Border Battle Tournament will now be known as the Concordia Invitational. That's because the Cobbers are now 19-1 in the past five Border Battle Tournaments that feature the top teams in the MIAC against the top teams from the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. CC won all four matches on Friday and Saturday and has now won eight straight since falling to St. Thomas on Sept. 24. Concordia is now 16-2 overall on the season.
Besides continuing their domination over the Iowa teams, the Cobbers presented head coach Tim Mosser with his 300th career win on Friday night. After sweeping Central 25-18, 25-21, 25-18, Concordia beat Simpson 3-1 (22-25, 25-17, 25-22, 25-19) to give Mosser his milestone victory. CC then went on to sweep Coe (25-15, 25-12, 25-14) and Wartburg (25-19, 25-22, 25-15) on Saturday to push Mosser's career record at Concordia to 302-181. The biggest win for Concordia came against Simpson who went on to beat No.5-ranked St. Thomas on Saturday. Simpson is currently undefeated in the IIAC this year.
With their 12-1 set record Concordia captured the mythical tournament team championship. The only other team to go undefeated at the tournament was St. Ben's but the Blazers finished with a 12-2 set record.
Individually the Cobbers were led by freshman Jenna Green who had a team-high 46 kills in the four matches. She hit .243 and had eight total blocks. For her efforts she was named to the All-Tournament Team - the second time she has been named to an All-Tournament Team this year. Green had at least seven kills in all four matches and had a tournament high 16 kills against Coe on Saturday. The 16 kills ties a career high for Green.
Besides Green, fellow freshman Katie Vohnoutka had 36 kills and seven blocks and Abby Scheel had 24 kills and 11 blocks. Valerie Glynn had a team-high 13 blocks for the tournament, while Amy Sykora posted 89 assists and Anna Tinkham had 75 digs.
Concordia will head back to MIAC action when they host Hamline on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m.
