MATCH RECAP:

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (10/07/08)--No.14-ranked Concordia belted out one of Bachman Turner Overdrive's greatest hits on Tuesday as they were "Taking Care of Business" against Augsburg in Minneapolis. The Cobbers trailed only one time in the entire match and crooned their way to a 25-19, 25-17, 25-20 win over the Auggies.

The win is the third straight for Concordia who improve to 12-2 overall and 5-1 in the MIAC. The victory keeps them in third place in the conference standings, only one game behind co-leaders St. Thomas and St. Ben's. Augsburg has their two-match winning streak come to an end as they fall to 10-10 overall and 1-5 in league play.

The Cobbers stepped off the bus and into the lead from the very first serve. CC went out to an 8-2 lead in the opener and never looked back. They allowed the Auggies to get to within three points in the middle of the first set but then pushed the lead back to seven points at  20-13 and then cruised home to a 25-19 win.

The start of the second set is where Augsburg held their only lead of the night. The Auggies tried to even the match at 1-1 by heading out to leads of 3-2 and 4-2 but were never able to hold off the Cobber frontline players and relinquished the lead at the 8-7 marker. The teams stayed within a couple of points of each other until Concordia went on a 9-2 run to close out the second set after they held a one-point lead at 16-15.

The Cobbers did not let up on the gas pedal at the start of the third set, bolting to a 9-2 lead. They then stretched the lead to nine points at 16-7 before Augsburg closed to within two points at 22-20. CC then showed their national ranking form by closing out the match after earning the final three points of the third set.

The Cobber defense held the Auggies to a .008 hitting percentage and CC held a 46-26 edge in kills in the match. Concordia also came up with nine blocks in the three sets as opposed to only four for the Auggies.

Freshman Katie Vohnoutka led the Cobbers for the second straight match. She had the best all-around match of her career coming away with a match-high 11 kills as well as 11 digs and five blocks. Vohnoutka is now second on the team in kills this year with 84. Fellow first-year player Jenna Green continued to be a force on the entire court. She had nine kills and a team-high 15 digs. Abby Scheel led all players with six blocks and also added eight kills, while the setting tandem of Amy Sykora (19) and Jill Hance (18) produced 37 assists.

Katie Christensen was the only Augsburg player with more than six kills. She finished with eight winners. Dani Tanaka led the Auggie defense with 17 digs and Shanna Reed had a match-high 19 assists.

Concordia will now step outside conference play and compete in the annual Minnesota-Iowa Border Battle Tournament that features the top teams in the MIAC taking on the top squads from the IIAC. The Cobbers will square off against Central and Simpson on Friday, Oct. 10 and then finish with Coe and Wartburg on Saturday, Oct. 11. All four matches will be played at the University of St. Thomas.
