MATCH RECAP:

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/04/08)--Concordia completed a key MIAC weekend sweep by cruising past St. Mary's 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-23) on Saturday in Moorhead. Less than 24 hours after edging St. Olaf, the Cobbers pulled away from the Cardinals by posting runs at critical spots in each of the three sets to come away with the sweep.

The win is the third straight for Concordia who improves to 11-2 overall and 4-1 in the MIAC. The Cardinals lose for the second straight night and drop to 11-8 in all matches and 3-2 in league play.

Both teams had similar overall attack numbers and played well defensively but it was the Cobbers' ability to string together runs at the right time that enabled to CC to win in less than an hour and a half.

Concordia had an attack percentage of .231 for the match while the Cardinals hit .222 for the three sets. CC came away with 66 digs as opposed to 65 for SMU in the match.

Concordia was led by freshman Katie Vohnoutka who posted a career-high 15 kills. It is the only the second time all season she has had more than nine kills in a match. Vohnoutka also had nine digs and one block. A pair of CC frontline players had nine winners each. Dana Wermers had nine kills while Jenna Green had nine kills and added 12 digs. Amy Sykora had a team-high 27 assists and Anna Tinkham recorded her second-straight 30-plus dig match. She ended the three sets with 30 digs.

Sarah Gardner led all players with 16 kills for St. Mary's. She also had 12 digs. Jessica Mate was the only other SMU player to have more than seven winners in the match. She came away with nine kills. Rachel Monterastelli had a match-high 39 assists and Theresa Perrini finished with a match-high 31 digs.

Concordia got behind early in the first set as they trailed 3-0 and then 4-1. The Cobbers eventually tied the match at 7-7 and the two teams stayed within three points of each other until CC came up with the decisive run with the score tied at 17-17. Concordia was able to rattle off five straight points and take a 22-17 lead which would turn into a 25-21 win in the opener.

The second set was won on a run in the final stretch. Clinging to a 21-20 lead, CC came up with four of the next six points to win 25-22.

The final set was more of the same as the Cobbers won the match by winning three of the final five points to win 25-23.

Concordia will head out on the road and play at Augsburg on Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. The Cobbers will then square off in the annual Border Battle Tournament on Friday, Oct. 10 and Saturday, Oct. 11 at St. Thomas.
