ST. PAUL, Minn. (09/27/08)--Concordia did their best Charles Barkley impersonation as they came up with a huge rebound performance on Saturday and swept Macalester 25-12, 25-21, 25-18 in St. Paul. The Cobbers were reeling after a tough loss to No.7-ranked St. Thomas on Wednesday but put that behind them as they beat the Scots for the for the eighth consecutive time. It is also the third straight three-set sweep for CC over Macalester.
The win gets Concordia back on the victory march. They are now 9-2 overall and 2-1 in the MIAC. The Scots lose for the ninth straight time and fall to 4-9 in all matches and 0-3 in league play.
The Cobbers set the tone in the very first set. Needing to make a statement that they were no longer looking behind them and ready to start the road to getting back into the win column, Concordia recorded 15 of the final 21 points in the opening set to seize a 25-12 win and regain their confidence. The opening-set win was followed by a closer 25-21 victory where CC scored the final four points of the set after it was tied at 21-21. The final set was more of the same for the Cobbers. Concordia rattled off nine of the final 12 points and coasted to the straight set win.
The Cobbers hit .257 for the match and limited the Scots to a .094 hitting percentage. Junior Maggie Olson had nine kills to lead the way for CC. She also had a match-high .615 hitting percentage and has now led the team in kills the past two matches. Senior Abby Scheel had a solid match in the middle of the net. She came away with six kills and had a match-high five blocks. Anna Tinkham had 11 digs in the win and the setting tandem of Jill Hance and Amy Sykora finished with 34 combined assists. Hance had 15 helpers while Sykora had 19.
Sonia Muzikarova led all players with 13 kills for Macalester. She was one of only three players on the team with a positive attack percentage. Danielle Dweck posted a match-high 23 assists in the losing effort.
Concordia will come home to host a conference doubleheader next weekend. The Cobbers will play St. Olaf on Friday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. and then turn around and square off against St. Mary's on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 3 p.m.
