MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/24/08)--It was over in an hour and 15 minutes and it wasn't pretty for the Cobbers as they were swept by No.7-ranked St. Thomas (25-16, 25-20, 25-19). Concordia only had the lead three times in the entire match as the Tommies hit .200 for the match and held CC to a mere .060 attack percentage.
The loss is the first for the Cobbers in the past six matches and drops their overall record to 8-2 on the year. CC is now 1-1 in MIAC play. The Tommies stay unbeaten in the conference and improve to 2-0. UST also wins for the 13th straight time after dropping their opening match of the season. St. Thomas is now 13-1 on the year.
St. Thomas took control of the match at the onset of the first set. They went on a 9-4 run after the score was tied at 5-5 and never looked back. They cruised to a 25-16 win in the first set and then repeated the feat in the second set. With the score tied at 7-7, UST ran off eight of the next 11 points and used that spurt to go on to a 25-20 win. In the third set, Concordia held a brief lead at 4-2 and then again at 7-6 but then the Tommies used one of their patented runs to open up a big lead. The teams traded points until the Toms held a 13-12 lead and then they won seven of the next nine points to grab a 20-14 lead. They were then able to trade points with the Cobbers and hang on to a 25-19 win.
For the match, Concordia only had a pair of players with more than five kills. Maggie Olson and Katie Vohnoutka had six kills each to lead the team. Olson had a match-high .556 hitting percentage, while Vohnoutka also had 15 digs and two blocks. Senior Anna Tinkham had 29 digs to lead the Cobber defense. Freshman Amy Sykora put up a team-high 13 assists.
The Tommies had a pair of players with at least 13 kills in the match. Katie McCaffrey and Kyley Crotty regularly found holes in the CC defense and combined for 29 kills. McCaffrey had 13 winners and Crotty came away with a match-high 16 kills. Emily Foster captained the UST offense by recording a match-high 42 assists and Katie Kremer had 35 digs for the three sets.
Concordia will look to rebound when they play at Macalester on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 3 p.m.
