| MATCH RECAP:
ST. PAUL, Minn. (09/17/08)--No.14-ranked Concordia spotted St. Kate's the first two sets in the conference opener on Wednesday and then rallied to sweep the final three sets (21-25, 15-25, 25-21, 25-19, 15-9) to earn their first MIAC victory of the year and win their fifth straight match. The victory pushes the Cobbers' overall record to 8-1 on the season. The Wildcats are now 4-6 on the season.
The young Cobbers showed their inexperience on the road as they stumbled out of the gate in the first two sets. CC was never able to get in a rhythm on offense and had no answer for the St. Kate's attack. After dropping the second set 25-15, their most lopsided set loss of the year, Concordia regrouped and showed their championship mettle as they pulled away in the end of set three and then took set four 25-19 before polishing off the upset-minded Wildcats 15-9 in the tie breaker.
For the match, five different Concordia players had at least eight kills. The team was led by freshman Jenna Green who had a team-high 10 kills in 48 chances and also came away with 22 digs and one block. Katie Vohnoutka and Valerie Glynn had nine kills each and Abby Scheel and Greta King came away with eight winners each. Scheel and King also had three blocks a piece on the night.
Senior defensive leader Anna Tinkham had a season-high 30 digs. The setter tandem of Jill Hance and Amy Sykora rotated through the CC offense. Hance finished with 24 assists and Sykora had 27 in the winning effort.
Concordia will have a full week off to prepare for their next conference match. In what could be a showdown between the top two teams in the MIAC, the No.14-ranked Cobbers will host the No.8-ranked St. Thomas on Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m.
