| MATCH RECAP:
MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/09/08)-- In one of the most thrilling matches in recent history in Memorial Auditorium Concordia lost a see-saw, five set affair to Jamestown 3-2 (21-25, 22-25, 25-22, 27-25, 5-15). The loss is the first of the year for the Cobbers and drops their record to 3-1. The Jimmies improve to 6-3 on the year and have now claimed wins over ranked opponents in the NAIA and now NCAA Division III.
The match was a see-saw adventure that featured 14 lead changes and 32 tie scores throughout the five-set event. The biggest back-and-forth combination came in the fourth set where the teams traded the lead four times and the set was tied on 12 occasions. The Cobbers pulled off the biggest comeback in the fourth set when the saved two match points and came back from a 23-20 deficit to claim a 27-25 win.
The match didn't start on the right foot for CC as they allowed Jamestown to reel off a 5-0 run at the back end of the first set and a 3-0 run at the very end of set No.2 to help the Jimmies to a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Cobbers then tightened their defense and turned the tables as they scored the final three points in the third set after the score was tied at 22-22. CC was nearly swept by the Jimmies after they allowed Jamestown to come back in the third set after leading 11-5 in the opening moments of the set.
The fourth set was the most dramatic and exciting. Both teams refused to give up easy points and both defenses came up with big plays throughout the entire set. The fourth set was never more than three points in favor of one team or the other after the middle part of the set. The Jimmies gained a 24-23 lead and served for the match but a service error allowed the Cobbers to tie the set at 24-24. That same scenario happened after Jamestown won the next point but failed to capitalize after an errant serve. CC then closed out the set by winning the next three points.
The fifth set was all Jamestown as Concordia had used all their energy in coming back from a 2-0 deficit. The Jimmies started the final set by winning six of the first seven points. They then won six of the next eight points to grab a 12-3 lead. They finished the match off with three kills from three different players.
Concordia went with a young lineup in the final three sets of the match. Freshman Jenna Green once again led the team in kills. She had 12 winners and has now had double-digit kill totals in the last two matches and has led CC in kills in three of the team's first four matches. She also had 18 digs and has had at least 10 digs in the last three matches. Junior Maggie Olson was the only other CC player with more than seven kills. She had season highs in kills and digs. She posted 10 kills and came away with 13 digs. Freshman Amy Sykora had 34 assists and senior Anna Tinkham recorded a match-high 25 digs.
For the Jimmies, Ali Edwards continually pounded down winners all night long and led all players with 19 kills. She was one of four Jamestown players that had at least 10 kills in the match. Shannon Fee had the next highest kill total with 16. Her sister Kayla Fee had a match-high 59 assists, while defensive specialist Lauren Wieler finished with 25 digs.
Concordia will travel to Colorado to play in the Colorado College Invite on Sept. 12-13. The Cobbers will play East Baptist State and Colorado College on Friday and then Whitman and Whittier on Saturday.
