| MATCH RECAP:
MOORHEAD, Minn. (08/29/08)--Concordia wasted little time in finding their groove in the new season as they swept UW-Stevens Point 25-8, 25-18, 25-13 in the first match of the 2008 campaign. The Cobbers blended a mixture of experienced players with a new group of freshmen and came away with a decisive win over an inter-regional opponent.
The match was the opener for both teams and continues Concordia's early-season excellence. CC has now won four straight season openers. The Cobbers also upped their overall record against the Pointers. CC now holds a 4-2 series advantage.
CC set the tone early in the match when they went on a 12-0 run and turned a 6-6 deadlock into an 18-6 runaway. The Cobbers finished the first set by cruising on a 7-2 sprint and finished with the 25-8 victory.
The second set was more of the same as Concordia turned a tie score at 11-11 into a 25-18 win. The key point in the match came when CC senior Jill Hance served three straight aces. She finished the match with nine service aces.
In the third set, the Pointers continued to have problems with Concordia's service game. In the end, the Cobbers had five more service winners in the final set and finished the match with 22. CC's passing and attack game also clicked in the final set. They were also able to use another giant run to finish off the match. With the set hanging in the balance at 14-13, Concordia went on an 11-0 run to close out the set and the match.
In the end, Concordia hit .232 and had 19 total kills. Stevens Point had 18 kills but hit only .130 for the match. Cobber freshman Jenna Green led all players with five kills. Hance had a match-high 16 assists and Anna Tinkham had 11 digs to start the season.
