| MATCH RECAP:
MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/03/07)-- Concordia senior right-side hitter Michelle Honek broke the school record for digs in a career in the Cobbers' 3-0 (30-26, 30-26, 30-23) win over Augsburg on Wednesday. Honek finished the match with 25 digs and now has 1,075 career digs. She broke the mark of 1,067 set by Angie Carlin from 1994-96.
The victory extends Concordia's winning streak to four matches. The Cobbers, ranked 12th in the latest AVCA DIII national poll, are now 10-4 overall and 5-1 in the MIAC. All four of CC's wins in the current victory streak have come against conference opponents and have pushed the Cobbers into a tie for second place in the league standings. Augsburg loses for the fourth time in the last five matches and falls to 8-11 overall and 1-5 in the MIAC.
All three games in the match went back-and-forth until the latter stages of the contest. In the opener, Concordia broke open a 23-21 lead by scoring four straight points and five of the next seven to post a 30-26 win. In the middle game, the teams flip-flopped lead changes eight times and had 15 tie scores. The difference came in the final nine points. With CC holding a slim 24-23 lead, the Cobbers scored three of the next four points to take a 27-24 lead. Augsburg then cut the lead to two due to a set error from CC. The teams then traded kills before Concordia was able to finish off the game with a pair of kills from sophomore Angie Bonde. The third game played out in the same fashion as the first two. The Auggies even had a 10-7 lead at one point - their largest lead in the match. Augsburg would hold onto the lead until Concordia tied the game at 14-14. From there, the Cobbers would go on two-point runs before the Auggies would reel them. That happened until CC posted a 23-21 lead and Augsburg was never able to answer, failing to make a decisive run and losing seven of the final nine points.
For the match, Concordia hit .236 and finished with 58 kills in 161 attack chances. Augsburg had an attack percentage of .123 for the match and came away with 37 kills on 146 chances. CC had 20 attack errors, while the Auggies had 19.
Honek continues to be the dominant attacking force at the net for Concordia in 2007. To go along with her 25 digs she also collected a match-high 19 kills and had one block. Abby Scheel had a near-perfect night on the attack front. She hit a career-high .529 and had a career-high 10 kills. She also added her usual two solo blocks. Scheel was the only other CC player with more than eight kills in the game. Sophomore Maggie Olson had eight kills and two blocks. Freshman Valerie Glynn added seven kills and four blocks, and, together with Scheel, is giving the Cobbers an imposing foce in the middle of the net. The two-headed assist tandem of Jill Hance and Alyssa Dahl posted 48 assists in the mach as both players had 24 helpers each. Anna Tinkham came away with a match-high 27 digs and has now recorded back-to-back matches with at least 27 digs.
Augsburg had only player with more than eight kills. Laura Harms had a team-high 12 kills and has now led the team in kills in three straight matches. She also came away with 12 digs and two service aces. Shanna Reed finished with 32 assists and Haley Bower had a team-high 21 digs.
Concordia will now turn their attention to the annual Minnesota/Iowa Border Battle Tournament. The Cobbers will play four matches against teams from the IIAC conference. All four matches will be held at Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa. CC will play Coe and Buena Vista on Friday and then finish off the tourney by playing Simpson and 19th-ranked Central on Saturday. Augsburg has a week off before playing at St. Olaf on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m.
