MATCH RECAP:

ST. PAUL, Minn. (9/19/07)--In a battle of the two heavyweights in MIAC volleyball, No.11-ranked Concordia was never able to find a groove and fell to No.6-ranked St. Thomas 3-1 (30-18, 24-30, 30-28, 30-17) in St. Paul on Wednesday.

The loss snaps the Cobbers 11-match conference winning streak - a string that dates back to the end of the 2005 regular season. Concordia is now 6-4 on the season and 1-1 in conference play. Of the four overall losses, three have come at the hands of teams ranked in the top six of the nation. The Tommies extend their winning streak to 12 matches as they improve to 12-2 overall and 2-0 in the MIAC.

The Tommies seized control of the match in the first game by claiming a 30-18 win. CC then rallied in the second game, going up 19-10 before closing out the contest 30-24. With the match tied at 1-1, St. Thomas was able to claim the pivotal third game by pulling away from Concordia at the very end of the game to win by two at 30-28. Deflated by their second-game loss, the Cobbers were never able to mount any type of surge in the fourth game, hit a mere .064, and lost 30-17.

The Cobbers were led by senior Michelle Honek who had 19 kills in 54 attack chances. She finished with an attack percentage of .241. Sophomores Angie Bonde and Maggie Olson combined for 20 kills on the night. Bonde had 11 kills and six digs, while Olson finished with nine kills and had four blocks. Alyssa Dahl came away with the most assists for CC. She finished with a career-high 43 assists. Anna Tinkham had 30 digs in the defeat for the Cobbers. She has now posted at least 30 digs in three of her last four matches.

Katie McCaffrey and Kylee Crotty had 19 kills each for the Tommies. Kristin Storrs was the third member of UST to finish with double-digit kill totals. She ended with 14 kills and had a match-high .444 attack percentage. Emily Foster had a match-high 55 assists and Aly McConnell added a match-high 32 digs as St. Thomas avenged a pair of losses to the Cobbers from last season - including a defeat in the semifinals of the conference tournament.

Concordia will look to get back to their winning conference ways when they host Macalester on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 3 p.m. in Memorial Auditorium. The game can be seen live via the internet at www.gocobbers.com and will also feature live statistics. St. Thomas returns to action by hosting No.25-ranked Carleton on Saturday at 3 p.m.
