MATCHDAY RECAP:

DAY 1
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (9/07/07)--Concordia played through a 3-0 (30-11, 30-23, 30-20) sweep at the hands of No.2-ranked Wittenberg (Ohio) and rebounded to beat No.15-ranked Ohio Northern 3-0 (30-19, 30-28, 31-29).

The Cobbers were punished for a slow start by national powerhouse Wittenberg. CC fell behind early, losing the first game 30-11. In the second game, CC was able to get their legs underneath them and rallied to keep the game close - losing in the end by seven. The Tigers then put the finishing touches on the match by pulling away in the third game for a 30-20 win.

For the match, Concordia did not have a player with more than nine kills. The Cobbers were led by Dana Wermers who put down nine kills in 18 total attack attempts. Michelle Honek had eight kills in 25 attack chances. Alyssa Dahl came away with 18 assists and Anna Tinkham had a team-high 21 digs.

After taking a break to regroup and find their game, Concordia stormed onto the court to turn the tables on 15th-ranked Ohio Northern, who entered the day undefeated. The Cobbers bolted from the gate in the first game and won going away 30-19. The final two games of the match could have gone either way but CC was able to edge the Polar Bears at the wire. Concordia claimed the second game 30-38 and then went into extra points to come away with a 31-29 win in game three to complete the sweep.

Honek and sophomore Angie Bonde led the CC attack from the outside. Both players finished with 15 kills. Bonde also had 20 digs, while Honek did her one better - recording a team-high 21 digs. Dahl had 40 assists to lead the CC offense.

Concordia will step back into the fire on Saturday when they square off against regional foe Central (Iowa) at 12:30. The Cobbers will finish off the Invite by playing host Washington University at 3 p.m. The Bears are currently ranked fourth in the AVCA national poll and went 2-0 in the first day of the tournament.
