MATCHDAY RECAP:
MOORHEAD, Minn. (08/31/07)--The saying goes "that it's like riding a bike." The Cobbers climbed right back on the seat and pedaled over Mayville State 30-22, 30-27, 30-26 to earn their first win of the season in the 2007 season opener.
The Cobbers were playing without three of their top front line players and their defensive specialist from last year's MIAC championship team. That proved to be no problem at all as Concordia continually found ways to score points by extending rallies and finding the hot player at the right time.
Senior captain Michelle Honek stepped to the forefront as she finished with a team-high 11 kills and 10 digs. Honek may prove to be the Cobbers' "go to" player in 2007. Right behind Honek was sophomore Angie Bonde who had 10 kills and a team-high 20 digs. She proved to be the perfect counter to Honek's right side attack.
Defensive specialist Anna Tinkham also came away with 20 digs and was able to get to balls that the Comets had hammered over the front line of CC. Alyssa Dahl captained the offense and had 26 assists in the game. She was able to spread out the Cobber attack and keep the Mayville State defense off balance.
The Comets' Alyssa Clancy led all players with 13 kills. Teammate Betsy Winkler had 29 assists and Ashley Nelson came away with a team-high 20 digs.
Concordia will finish off the opening day of the Cobber Invitational by hosting Valley City State at 6 p.m. in Memorial Auditorium.
