Concordia has accomplished every goal it set out to attain at the beginning of the regular season as they beat St. Ben's 3-1 (30-26, 23-30, 30-12, 30-23) on Wednesday to complete a perfect 11-0 regular season record in conference play. The Cobbers have now won the MIAC regular season championship for the first time in program history, gone a perfect 11-0 in league play for only the second time in school history and secured home court advantage throughout the conference tournament. Those goals will be officially put away once practice starts on Thursday as Concordia will try to capture the league double by winning both the regular season and the playoff tournament titles in the same year. The Cobbers have never accomplished that feat before and only two teams have gone on to win both the regular season and tournament titles in the same year in the five-year history of the event. The perfect regular season clincher was the ultimate gift for the four Cobber seniors that were honored before the start of the match. Danielle Dahl, Becca Shane, Lindsay Sipma and Anna Walden all received gifts before the match and then delivered the goods during the match. Dahl finished with a match-high 17 kills, while Shane added 12 and Sipma chipped in 16 more. Walden helped out the defensive end by coming away with 11 digs - her fourth straight match with at least 10 kills and ninth time in the past 11 matches that she has come away with double-digit dig totals. As a team, Concordia came away with 66 kills on the night and hit .189 in 201 total attack chances. The Blazers were held in check by the smothering Cobber defense and only managed to knock down 45 kills and were held to an attack percentage of .090 in 189 total attacks. The Blazers were led by seniors Teri Knepper and Laura Zwach. Knepper had a team-high 13 kills and Zwach did her best mosquito impersonation as she buzzed all over the defensive end of the court. She played every single point and came away with an impressive game-high 31 digs. The match started out with little fan fare after the senior celebration. Concordia jumped to a 4-2 lead in game but were then caught at 9-9 and the teams played back-and-forth until the Cobbers rattled eight of the final 12 points to win 30-26. The second game turned in favor of the Blazers when they used a 9-4 surge at the beginning of the game to claim a 30-23 win. With the crowd of 350 getting restless, the Cobbers decided to put on a display of championship volleyball in the third game. Concordia pounced on St. Ben's from the beginning, taking a 10-3 lead and turning it into a 30-12 shellacking. Game four turned out to be a coronation for the Cobbers and their seniors as they cruised to a 13-5 lead at the start of the game and then coasted to the 30-23 match-clinching win. Concordia will now wait to see who their opponent in the conference semifinals will be. The Cobbers will host the winner of No. 4 St. Thomas and No. 5 Hamline on Thursday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. |
