MATCH RECAP:

ST. PAUL , Minn. (10/18/06)-- Ladies and gentlemen, your 2006 MIAC Regular Season Champions - the Concordia College Cobbers. You may now use that phrase whenever addressing the 2006 Concordia volleyball team.

That title was put in place because of Concordia's 3-0 (30-24, 30-25, 30-20) victory over St. Catherine on Wednesday. The Cobbers are now 10-0 in the MIAC and have clinched their first outright conference championship in program history. The win is also the 14th straight for Concordia who ups their overall record to 21-1, the best start to a season in the history of the program.

There was little drama in the outright title-clinching victory. Concordia disposed of the Wildcats in 75 minutes and trailed only twice in the entire match. The biggest push by St. Catherine came in the middle of game no. 1 where they stayed within striking distance until the final eight points of the game.

In the opener, the Wildcats hung around throughout most of the game and forced ties at 11-11and 23-23 before Concordia went on a 7-1 run to finish the game and seize control of the match.

St. Catherine started quickly in game two, claiming their second lead of the match and holding it until Concordia tied the game at 5-5. From that point on, the Cobbers would never trail again and steadily pulled away from the Wildcats, gaining their biggest lead of the first two games at 23-16.

The third game was a crowning cruise for Concordia. The Cobbers left little doubt as they raced to leads of 9-3 and 13-5 before pulling out to their biggest lead of the entire match at 24-9.

St. Catherine had no answer for the front line of Concordia. The Cobbers attack force of Becca Shane, Michelle Honek, Lindsay Sipma and Danielle Dahl combined for 39 kills, only five fewer than the entire Wildcat team combined. Concordia finished with 55 kills in the three-game match and had an attack percentage of .291. St. Catherine was held to an attack percentage of .103 for the match and a low-game total of .000 in the third game.

Shane once again led all players in kills. She finished with 12 winners to go along with three blocks. Honek was the only other Cobber player in double-digit kill totals. She had 10 kills to go along with seven digs. Sipma chipped in nine kills and a match-high six blocks, while Danielle Dahl added eight.

Jill Hance and Katlin Anderson combined for 37 assists for Concordia. Hance, this week's MIAC Setter of the Week, had a team-high 20 helpers and Anderson finished with 17.

Anna Walden led the defense with a match-high 17 digs. Sophomore Abby Scheel continues to be a one-player blocking crew at the net. She had one solo block and five total blocks. She leads the team in solo blocks with 44 and needs 15 more to tie the single-season program record of 59 held by Amy Walstad set in 1989.

Concordia will finish off the regular season at home against St. Ben's on Wednesday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. The Cobbers will then set their sights on achieving the conference double as they enter into the MIAC tournament. Concordia has clinched home-court advantage throughout the league playoffs. They will start the tournament with a first-round bye and then host a semifinal match against the winner of the no.4/no.5 seeds on Thursday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m.
