MATCH SCOREBOARD:
MATCH REWIND: Match Stats: Final Stats vs. St. Olaf - Online! MATCH RECAP: NORTHFIELD, Minn. (10/14/06)-- And the hits just keep on coming! The check list for the 2006 Concordia volleyball team is quickly getting filled up. After Saturday's 3-1 (31-29, 26-30, 30-24, 30-23) victory over St. Olaf in Northfield, the Cobbers have just about completed their pre-season goal chart. Ranked in the top 25 for 32 consecutive weeks. Check. Ranked in the top five for over a month. Check. Best season start in the history of the program. Check. 20-win season. Check. Oh, and one more - MIAC regular-season championship. Check and Double Check!! All those items came to pass on Saturday as the win over the Oles assured the Cobbers of at least a share of the conference regular-season championship for the first time in program history. Concordia can claim the title outright by winning one of their final two conference matches. Concordia is now 9-0 in league play and two wins away from a perfect conference season. The victory gives the Cobbers a bye into the semifinals of the MIAC tournament and clinches the No.1 seed in the tournament. The road to the conference playoff championship will now go through Moorhead as Concordia has home court advantage throughout the conference playoffs. To put the final cherry on top of the giant-sized sundae, the win also gives Concordia a 20-1 record on the year which breaks the record for the best start in program history. The 20 victories also marks the fifth straight season the Cobbers have reached that milestone. Like the other 19 wins, Concordia's win over the Oles did not come without tense moments. In the first game, the Cobbers had to withstand one game point and rally from a 27-24 deficit late in the contest. After winning the last three points in the opener to claim a 31-29 victory, Concordia watched as St. Olaf pulled away from a 14-14 tie in game two to earn a 30-26 win. True to the season's reoccurring theme, the Cobbers did not let the bump in the road throw them completely off their quest for the victory. Concordia responded by reversing the roles in game three. After clinging to a 22-20 lead, the Cobbers went on a 4-1 run and finished the pivotal game by winning eight of the final 12 points to grab a 30-24 win. The fourth game started slowly as Concordia spotted the Oles a 6-1. The Cobbers then caught the Oles at 11-11 and went on to win 30-23. Less than a day after being held to under 10 kills for only the third time all season, senior Becca Shane responded with a 23-kill, 5-block effort. Shane also finished the four-game match with a .409 attack percentage. She was one of the Concordia players with at least 10 kills. Danielle Dahl added 13 kills and four blocks and Michelle Honek had 10 kills and 15 digs. Sophomore Jill Hance guided the CC offense to 63 kills and a team attack percentage of .237. She finished with a team-high 36 assists and also racked up a match-high four service aces. It is the second consecutive match she has had four service winners. Anna Walden backed up her 21-dig performance against Gustavus with a 20-dig afternoon against the Oles. She has posted at least 20 digs in four of the last six matches. As a team, the Cobbers combined for 14 blocks and forced 26 attack errors by the Oles. Concordia will look to claim sole possession of the MIAC title when they play at St. Catherine on Wednesday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m.
