MATCH RECAP:

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/11/06)-- Trailing 8-2 in the second game and already down 1-0, Concordia rolled over, picked up the phone to answer their wake-up call and proceeded to cruise past Bethel 3-1 (27-30, 30-16, 30-22, 30-24).

The victory keeps the Cobbers' conference record perfect at 7-0. It also clinches the seventh straight MIAC playoff berth for Tim Mosser's squad. To top things off, Concordia is now 18-1 overall and has won 11 straight matches. The 18-1 record to start the season is the second best in program history. The 2004 Cobber squad started the year 19-1 before going on to win the MIAC playoff championship. The win also keeps Concordia on the road to their first MIAC regular-season title. The Cobbers are now in sole possession of first place after Gustavus fell 3-1 to St. Thomas to drop their record to  6-1.

The Cobber defense once again tightened its grip on the opposing team's offense. After stumbling through the first game and allowing Bethel (13-10/4-5 MIAC) to come away with 21 kills and an attack percentage of .197, Concordia limited the Royals to only 34 kills in the next three games and not allow an attack percentage of higher than .070 the rest of the way.

The Concordia offense got on track at just the right time and finished with 65 kills and an attack percentage of .180. Becca Shane led all players with 21 kills. She also had five combined blocks and four service aces. She was one of three Cobber players in double-digit kill totals. Michelle Honek had 13 kills to go along with 15 digs and Danielle Dahl added 12 kills.

Jill Hance continued her solid assist trend. Hance had a team-high 30 assists and 13 digs. Freshman Angie Bonde led the Cobbers with 23 digs, but it was the play of sophomore Anna Tinkham that helped turn the tide in the second game. Tinkham stepped off the bench and was able to calm the Cobber defense by finishing with a career-high 22 digs.

Bethel was led by Liz Glesne who had 16 kills and six digs. She was the only Royal player with more than nine kills. Laura Naig recorded a match-high 42 assists, while teammate Joslin Geisler had a match-high 39 digs.

Concordia will now embark on their annual conference back-to-back road trip. The Cobbers will play at second-place Gustavus on Friday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. and then travel to Northfield, Minn. to take on St. Olaf on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 3 p.m. The match against Gustavus can be seen live on the web via the Gustavus athletics website.
