Match 4 Highlights: Becca Shane - 15 kills, 7 blocks DAY 2 RECAP: ST. PAUL, Minn. (10/06/06)-- It wasn't easy, but in the end it was just another step up the ever-increasing impressive ladder the 2006 Concordia volleyball team has built in the first 18 games of the season. Down 2-1 in games against No.9-ranked Central (Iowa) and trailing 28-26 in the fourth game, the Cobbers staged a furious comeback that proved how well CC can handle late-match pressure situations, and might very well be a turning point as the Cobbers try to capture their very first MIAC regular-season championship. Concordia clawed their way to a 33-31 win in the fourth game and then held off the Dutch in the fifth, and final, game to win 3-2. CC then quickly dispatched of Cornell (Iowa) 30-18, 30-22, 30-11 in the final match of the Border Battle Tournament to win their 10th straight match and improve to 17-1 on the season. The 17 wins in the first 18 matches marks the second best start in program history. The Cobbers will share the tournament championship with St. Thomas, who also went 4-0 over the weekend. Concordia is undefeated in the prestigious Minnesota/Iowa Border Battle Tournament in the past three years in a showcase invitational that pits the top teams from the MIAC against the top teams from the IIAC. The Cobbers have compiled a perfect 12-0 record during that time. The usual suspects stepped up for Concordia in the second day of the tournament. Senior Becca Shane had 17 kills and eight blocks against Central and then followed it up with a 15-kill, 7-block performance against Cornell. She accounted for 47 points in the two matches on Saturday. For the tournament, Shane had 62 kills and moved into second place on the Cobber all-time career kill list. She now has 1,389 career kills and passed Jacki Barten ('05) who finished her All-American career with 1,362. Defensive Specialist Anna Walden had another stellar day. She had 20 digs against Central and seven against Cornell. She only had four receiving errors the entire day. Danielle Dahl posted 10 kills in the first match and had seven kills in the second match in limited duty. Freshman Angie Bonde added nine kills and 17 digs vs. Central and 12 kills and three digs vs. Cornell. Jill Hance stepped into the forefront of the Cobber offense in the tournament. She had a team-high 32assists against Central and then followed that up with 21 in the second match. For the four-match weekend, she had 112 assists. Concordia returns to MIAC play when they host Bethel on Wednesday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. in Memorial Auditorium.
