MATCH REWIND: Match Stats: Final Stats vs. Hamline - now online! MATCH RECAP: ST. PAUL, Minn. (10/04/06)-- Pop quiz: Name the oldest coaching cliché that deals with defense? Answer: "Offense wins games but defense wins championships." The 2006 Concordia volleyball team is turning that adage into their season-long theme as they turned in another defensive masterpiece in sweeping Hamline 31-29, 30-15, 30-23 in St. Paul on Tuesday. The Cobbers held the Pipers to an attack percentage of .095 and only allowed 35 kills the entire three-game match. It marked the fourth time in the past five matches that Concordia has held their opponents to under a .100 attack percentage. Concordia once again dominated the front-line. At the net, the Cobbers' brick wall defense repeatedly sent the Pipers' kill attempts back to the other side for winners. In the end, CC had eight total team blocks and disrupted Hamline's offensive attack time after time. While the defense was acting like a rebound wall, the Concordia offense was also flexing its muscles. Senior Becca Shane finished with a match-high 21 kills, only 14 behind the entire team total for Hamline. Two other players also had double-digit kill totals. Danielle Dahl had 10 kills and junior bookend Michelle Honek also added 10. The trio combined for 41 kills - six more than the Pipers had in the three games. When Hamline's attack did get past the front-line, it was neatly cleaned up by defensive specialist Anna Walden. Walden came up with 20 digs in the match. It was the most digs in a three-game match this season for the senior. When Walden wasn't diving on the floor to get to an attack, freshman Angie Bonde was there to make the play. Bonde had 18 kills in the match. Three different Cobber players had at least 10 assists in the match. Sophomore Alyssa Dahl had a team-high 15 helpers, while Katlin Anderson had 13 and Jill Hance chipped in 11. Concordia will step outside the conference to keep in the prestigious Minnesota/Iowa Border Battle Tournament on Oct. 6-7. The tournament pits the top teams in the MIAC against the top teams from the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC). The Cobbers have not lost a match in the tourney in the past two seasons. CC will play Wartburg and Buena Vista on Friday and square off against No.9-ranked Central and Cornell on Saturday. All four matches will be held at the University of St. Thomas.
