(09/23/06)-- Concordia head coach Tim Mosser was hoping for a dreamlike trip to the dentist on Saturday when the Cobbers hosted the 4-9 Cardinals of St. Mary's - quick and painless. For the second straight match, the No. 4-ranked Cobbers were facing a team that was in the bottom half of the conference standings. On Tuesday, Concordia allowed Augsburg to rally back after an 0-2 start and had to hang on to win 3-2. On Saturday, Mosser wanted a short match that featured the Cobber dominant front-line attack. Facing a road-weary Cardinals team that had played at St. Ben's on Friday night, Mosser's wish was granted as Concordia took care of business and swept St. Mary's 30-19, 30-11, 30-27. The victory is the fourth straight for the Cobbers as they improve to 11-1 on the season and remain perfect in conference play at 4-0. The Cardinals see their losing streak slide to five matches. SMU is now winless in the MIAC at 0-4. Overall, they drop to 4-10. The win also helped Mosser move to within one victory of his 100th career conference win. In Mosser's first 13-plus years, he has amassed an MIAC record of 99-49. The tale of the match came from the offensive attack. Concordia's front-line players combined for 59 kills in the three games and had an attack percentage of .321. On the other side of the net, St. Mary's finished with only 26 kills and had an attack percentage of .021 for the three games. The Cobbers defense not only held the SMU attack to 26 kills but they also had a combined 15 blocks. In the second game alone, Concordia had an unreal attack percentage of .630. Senior Becca Shane once again led by example for Concordia. She finished with a match-high 18 kills and had four blocks. She was the only Cobber player to have more than 10 kills. Shane has now recorded double-digit kill totals in nine of the team's 11 matches this season. She also crossed the 200-kill barrier for the fourth straight season. Shane now has 200 kills on the season and 1,295 for her career. She is eight kills away from jumping into fourth place on the school's all-time kill list. Danielle Dahl had nine kills one block. Three different players had at least 10 digs for Concordia. Anna Walden and Anna Tinkham each had a team-high 13 digs. Freshman Angie Bonde added another 12. Alyssa Dahl took over the controls of the Cobber offense for the match. She had a match-high 27 assists. For the Cardinals, Molli Dant was the only player that more than five kills. She recorded 11 kills on 43 attack attempts. Dant also added 12 digs. Theresa Perrini had 19 digs to lead the SMU defense and Breanna Benham put up 18 assists on the offensive side of the attack. Concordia will take to the road next week. The Cobbers will play at Macalester on Wednesday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. |
