MATCH RECAP:

MOORHEAD, Minn. (09/16/06)-- Concordia capped one of the best weeks in program history by beating No.16-ranked Carleton 3-1. The victory finishes off a span of seven days where the Cobbers downed the No.9-ranked team in the country, the No.4-ranked squad and finally the 16th-ranked team.

Last Saturday the Cobbers swept, then No.9, UW-Oshkosh and on Wednesday polished off defending MIAC champion, and current No. 4, St. Thomas 3-1. The wins over the Tommie and Knights jump start Concordia's bid for the MIAC title as both St. Thomas and Carleton were picked to finish in the top three of the conference in the preseason coach's poll.

The win pushes Concordia's overall record to 9-1 and keeps their conference mark at a perfect 2-0. Carleton falls to 6-4 in all games and 1-1 in conference play.

The match didn't start out the way the other two had against the nationally ranked teams. Against Oshkosh and St. Thomas, Concordia bolted from the gate to rack up early leads and take a 1-0 lead in both matches. Against Carleton on Saturday, CC needed one full game to get back on track before unleashing their potent senior front-line attack.

The senior trio of Becca Shane, Danielle Dahl and Lindsay Sipma carried the Cobbers against the Tommies. And on Saturday after game 1 they performed a similar feat. When the dust had settled, the three players had accounted for 37 kills and eight combined blocks. They each had at least 13 kills, which was more than any player on the Knights. Shane finished with a match-high 20 kills, while Sipma added 14 and Dahl chipped in 13.

Junior Michelle Honek had 10 kills to give Concordia four players with double-digit kill totals in the four-game match. Honek also had a match-high 30 digs.

The sophomore setting tandem of Alysaa Dahl and Katlin Anderson continued to shine. Dahl had a match-high 29 assists and Anderson recorded 26 helpers.

Anna Walden
helped finish off the Knights in the fourth and final game. Walden served a pair of consecutive service aces before the final point of the match. She finished with a match-high three service aces and helped CC record eight total aces on the day.

As a team, Concordia's defense limited Carleton to a mere .084 attack percentage and recorded nine combined blocks. On the other side of the net, CC hit for a .216 percentage and finished with 69 kills in 185 total chances.

All-MIAC performer Danielle Hargreaves led the Knights with 20 kills. Heather La Chapelle had a team-high 20 assists and Laura Barsness led Carleton with 28 digs.

The Cobbers will return to conference action right away as they host Augsburg on Tuesday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. The Auggies are coming off a big win over Bethel on Friday night.
