MATCH RECAP:

ST. PAUL, Minn. (09/13/06)-- In a match that pitted two of the top seven teams in the country, Concordia sprinted from the gate and captured a 3-1 (30-26, 26-30, 30-22, 30-27) win over previously unbeaten and No. 4-ranked St. Thomas.

The victory gives the Cobbers a pair of wins over top ten ranked teams in the past five days. Concordia swept then No.9-ranked UW-Oshkosh 3-0 in the third match of the Trinity Tournament on Saturday.

The victory also avenges last year's conference opening loss to the Tommies. St. Thomas used the momentum of that victory to go undefeated in the conference and eventually go on to the Central Region final in the NCAA Tournament.

With the win, Concordia is now 8-1 on the season - their best start since last season when they began 10-1. The Tommies fall for the first time all season and slide to 8-1. Entering the match, St. Thomas had only dropped two games during their first eight matches.

The Cobbers broke to quick leads in all three of their game wins. After beating the Tommies 30-26 in the first game and then dropping the second game by a similar 30-26 score, Concordia opened with a 20-10 in game three and closed out the pivotal game 30-22. In the fourth, and deciding game, CC held leads of 10-1 and 19-7 and had to hold off a hard-charging St. Thomas team when they cut the lead to 26-24.

Becca Shane had a monster match for the Cobbers. The senior finished with a match-high 21 kills and 10 combined blocks.

Shane set the tone for the Cobber defense which posted 29 combined blocks and held the dangerous Tommie attack to a season-low .212 attack percentage.

Shane was part of a trio of senior Cobbers that all had kill totals in double-digits. Danielle Dahl had 11 kills and seven combined blocks and Lindsay Sipma recorded 10 kills.

Sophomore setter Alyssa Dahl had a match-high 32 assists and fellow sophomore Katlin Anderson added 17 assists.

Anna Walden, who has come on in the past five matches to give the Cobbers a solid defensive specialist, finished with 23 digs. It is the fifth time in the last seven matches she has had at least 10 digs. Walden was joined by three other teammates who all had over 15 digs in the game as the Cobbers combined for a season-high 93 digs. That total is in the top three on the school's all-time list for digs by a team in a four-game match.

Michelle Honek and Alyssa Dahl each had 17 digs and freshman Angie Bonde added 16. Honek also had eight kills and a match-high three service aces.

Concordia will continue with their killer schedule when they host No. 16-ranked Carleton on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 3 p.m.
