MATCH RECAP:

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (09/09/06)-- It was only a matter of time. Concordia had gone three seasons without losing a regular-season tournament match. The streak had reached 30 matches including an impressive three-game sweep over No. 9 UW-Oshkosh.

Then it happened.

The Cobbers came out flat against a traditionally-rich Trinity program and fell in three games 30-15, 30-13, 30-19. The loss is the first of the season for Concordia and moves their season record to 7-1. With the win, the Tigers win the tournament and improve to 6-2 on the year. Trinity has made the NCAA playoffs for the past 14 seasons and was in the "others receiving votes" category in the preseason AVCA national poll.

Nothing worked for Concordia in the match against Trinity. The usually steady offensive attack had a hard time finding holes in the Tigers defense and the Cobber defense was unable to come up with the big play to get a stop.

Junior Michelle Honek led Concordia with 11 kills and 13 digs. She was the only Cobber player to have at least 10 kills. Becca Shane finished with nine kills on 21 attack chances.

Shane was the only Cobber named to the all-tournament team.

Against nationally-ranked UW-Oshkosh, Concordia had a combined total of 19 blocks. Against Trinity, the Cobber defense could only come up with eight combined blocks. Abby Scheel had a team-high four blocks including two solo blocks. She now has 28 total blocks on the year, second only to Shane's 36.

Concordia will now open MIAC play against defending champion St. Thomas on Wednesday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. The match is one of the top battles in the MIAC during the entire season and could go a long way in determining who sits in the driver's seat for the race for the MIAC title.
