Match Stats: Final Stats vs. Christopher Newport

MATCH RECAP:

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (09/08/06)-- It wasn't the start that head coach Tim Mosser and the rest of the Concordia volleyball team had hoped for as they began the Trinity University Invitational. The Cobbers dropped their opening game against Christopher Newport (Va.) 30-24 and looked like they were still touring the sites in beautiful San Antonio, Texas.

The sightseeing tour came to an abrupt halt in the second game and Concordia rolled to three straight game wins en route to a 3-1 (24-30, 30-27, 30-19, 32-30) victory over the Lady Captains.

The Cobbers ran their season record to a perfect 5-0 and have now won 28 straight matches in regular-season tournaments. Christopher Newport fell to 2-4 on the season after going 32-6 in 2005 and earning a spot in the NCAA Tournament.

The Concordia defense played a huge part in the tournament-opening match. The Cobbers came away with 43 digs in the four-game victory. They also combined for 19 blocks. Senior defensive specialist Anna Walden came away with a team-high 12 digs, while Becca Shane had six blocks and Abby Scheel added five more. Walden also led the team with two service aces. Shane was her usual threatening self at the net, recording a match-high 15 kills on 32 total attacks.

Concordia will continue its quest for another regular-season title when they face Hardin-Simmons (Texas) in the second match of the tournament at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
