MATCH RECAP:

MOORHEAD, Minn. (08/31/06)-- The official amount of time it took for the Concordia returning varsity members to get comfortable with their new teammates was 11 points. After that point it looked as if the 14 players on the Cobber roster had been playing together for a couple of seasons.

No. 11 Concordia went from leading by one at 6-5 to pulling away at 10-5 and finally shutting the door at 24-10 as they cruised to an opening-match sweep over St. Scholastica (30-15, 30-15, 30-15) in the first match of the Concordia Invitational.

The win was the Cobbers' second straight opening -match win and third in the past four seasons. The Saints lose their opening match of the season and fourth straight dating back to the end of last season.

The Cobbers' balanced attack was led by junior Michelle Honek who finished the match with match-highs in kills (14) and digs (16). Concordia senior Becca Shane started off her final campaign by recording eight kills and a match-high four service aces. Sophomore Abby Scheel made her presence felt at the net by coming away with five total blocks. Alyssa Dahl and Katlin Anderson each had 20 assists in helping guide the Cobber offense. Freshman Angie Bonde showed great all-around potential by recording 10 digs and six kills.

As a team, the Cobbers had an attacking percentage of .344 and came away with 10 blocks. They held St. Scholastica's offense in check as the Saints could only muster up 22 kills in the match on their way to a .053 hitting percentage. Both teams committed nine service errors on the afternoon.

Amy Thompson had six kills to lead the Saints. She was helped out by Katie Berscheit who posted 15 assists.

Concordia will face Mayville State in the second match of the tournament at 7 p.m. in Memorial Auditorium.
