ST. PAUL, Minn.-- Four minutes into their game with Hamline and it looked liked Concordia was going to lose for the fifth straight time. But then after 17 minutes, it looked as if the Cobbers had learned valuable season lessons and was ready to battle the Pipers to the end.

Unfortunately two goals in a span of 4:42 in the middle of the first half quenched any comeback hopes and sent Concordia to a 4-1 in St. Paul.

The Pipers started strong by scoring a goal just 4:01 into the game. It marked the sixth time in seven games this season that Concordia has conceded the first goal of the game.

The Cobbers were able to counter the Piper opening shot with a goal of their own at 16:43. Kwaku Opoku took a pass from Ryan Elling and notched his second goal of the year to tie the game at 1-1.

The game-deciding stretch of 4:42 started when Andrew Helling scored at 26:12. Ben Watkins then added a third goal when he scored at 30:54 and continued Concordia's trend of giving up goals in pairs. It is the eighth time this season that the Cobbers have given up goals within seven minutes of one another.

The Pipers tacked on the third, and final, unanswered goal five minutes into the second half when Jacob Helling scored to make it a 4-1 deficit.

Hamline outshot Concordia 27-7 in the game and held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Concordia goalkeeper Brett Oestreich made nine saves, while Piper keeper Andrew Clement turned aside one shot to pick up the win.

The Cobbers return home to host St. Mary's on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 2:00pm. The game is part of the annual college Homecoming celebration.
