Gameday Game Recap

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (10/25/10)-- Concordia's chances to extend its 10-game unbeaten streak against No.15-ranked Washington Univ. (Mo.) were dealt a severe blow in the sixth minute of play when MIAC leading scorer Riley McGlynn was knocked out of the game after being hit in the head by the Bear's goalie.

Unable to generate any sustained quality chances, the Cobbers gave up a goal in each half and lost 2-0 in St. Louis on Monday. The loss is the first for Concordia since Sept. 15. Without McGlynn, the Cobbers were shut out for the first time in 14 games - a streak that dates back to Sept. 8. It is only the second time all season that Concordia did not score at least one goal.

The loss drops Concordia's overall record to 12-4-1 on the year with one game to play in the regular season. Washington Univ. wins for the fifth time in the last six games and moves to 12-1-3 on the season.

The complexion of the game completely changed in the sixth minute of play when McGlynn ran on to a bouncing ball just outside the Bear's penalty area. The Washington U. goalie came outside the box and hammered McGlynn in the head as he played the ball. McGlynn left the game and did not return.

Wash. U carried the attack in the first half and finally got on the board when defender Randall Schoen fired a shot off of a clearing attempt from 35 yards out and the ball sailed over CC keeper Peter Runquist and dove just under the bar.

The Cobbers looked to have tied the game up just minutes later when defender Felix Okoth headed a Marco Riboli service into the net. However, the referee whistled a Concordia player for a foul in the area and the goal was disallowed.

Concordia had a solid stretch of play for 20 minutes in the second half but was never able to get the equalizer and then Wash U. put the game out of reach in the 86th when Joe Duncan ran on to a crossing pass from 25 yards out and pounded it into the back of the net.

In the game the Cobbers were outshot 17-9 in total shots and 10-4 in shots on goal. Senior wing midfielder Philip Bruckbauer had a team-high three shots and reserve Artem Shchepetkin had a pair of strikes at goal.

Runquist finished the game with eight saves and played one of his best games of the season. The bears split the goalie duties with Andrew Serio starting the game and making three stop in the first 45 minutes and Jonathan Jebson coming out of the pen to stop one shot and earn the save.

Concordia will finish off the regular season when they play at St. John's on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 3 p.m. If the Cobbers come away with a win they will earn their first-ever berth in the MIAC playoffs.
