ST. PAUL, Minn. (10/27/09)-- It wasn't the result they were looking for but Concordia's 0-0 double overtime tie with St. Thomas wasn't exactly the playoff death knell either. The Cobbers battle the Tommies through 110 minutes of play on Tuesday in St. Paul with neither defense allowing a score. The tie puts both teams at 5-3-1 in conference play with one league game left to play. The two teams could be a part of a five-team jumbled mess for the final three playoff spots in the league tournament.

The Cobber defense has not conceded a goal in the past seven games and the "No Goal Patrol" has not been scored upon in 668:39 consecutive minutes. The seven-game shutout streak and 668:39 consecutive minute scoreless stretch are both program records and both longest in either men's or women's soccer history at Concordia.

The storyline for the game was the forward match-up between a pair of sophomores. Concordia's Riley McGlynn and the Tommies' Mike Hutton both dominated play in the attacking thirds and both were the ones that had the best chances to score in the game. McGlynn finished with seven shots for the Cobbers while Hutton had a game-high 10 shots for UST.

The other determining factor in the game was the win. There was a 20 mph wind blowing from end to end which played a huge factor in the style of play in both halves.

The Cobbers went against the wind in the first half and stopped the Tommie attach from scoring. CC goalie Mads Schmidt made a pair of nice saves from shots inside the penalty area and relied on his defense to make one more. In the first 45 minutes of play, St. Thomas held a 9-4 edge in total shots.

Going with the wind in the second half, Concordia was able to put up a more sustained offensive attack and had several better chances to score. Neither team was able to come up with a quality chance to put home the game deciding goal in the final 45 minutes of regulation. For the entire second half, the two teams combined for only two shots on net and both goalies were equal to the task.

The Cobbers outshot the Tommies in the two overtime periods. For the two, 10-minute extra session, CC held a 6-4 edge in total shots. Once again the teams found it hard to put the ball on frame as there were only four total shots on goal in the overtimes.

For the game, St. Thomas held a 19-15 advantage in total shots and a 9-5 margin in shots on goal. Both teams had six corner kicks in the game. Schmidt made all nine stops in the game to post his eighth shutout on the season. That ties the school record for most shutouts in a season. St. Thomas goalie Carlos Castelan made five saves to pick up his fifth shutout of the year.

Concordia will finish the regular season by hosting St. John's on Saturday, Oct. 31 at 3 p.m. A win would go a long way in helping the Cobbers earn their first-ever conference tournament appearance.
